Transfer Case Shift Relay Module

Transfer Case Shift Relay Module
Does anyone know where it is located in a 97 F150 XLT Automatic with the ESOF?
I called the dealer and its a $75 part, but they wouldn't tell me where it's located.
If it goes bad, would it be possible to still select 4L just no 4H?
Thanks,

Thanks,

FTE has Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsors that give parts discounts off the ACTUAL MSRP to members.

Look on this page among the FTE sponsors for the link to FTEpartsguy.

FTEpartsguy: Ed Olson, parts manager at PARR FORD in Bremerton WA.

Contact Ed, he will be happy to assist you.

He will tell you where the module is located...here's the discount price:

F65Z14N089AA .. Relay / MSRP: $75.92 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $54.66

I'm also looking for the location, but I'm not that familar with these newer trucks...so bear with me.

EDIT: See post #4.

I'll see if I can get a hold of him. I really need the part today and our local lace has it. We are expecting a decent amount of snow and ice tomorrow. Really wanted to get that module replaced tonight.

Anyone knows on where it is, thanks!

I typed the part number in the last post, I also found a pic, it appears to be next to the cluster in the dash itself.

But I'm not 100% sure this is the relay you need, because there are other relays that control other things...and all have the same basic part number of 14N089.

Ed WILL know for sure.

I'm feeling really stupid right now because I tried both of those part numbers on their site and get nothing.

Where did you find the picture? Can you post a direct link to where the pictures is.

Thanks again. I'll try to contact Ed later, I'm at work and cant at this time.

I know your short on time here, but what makes you think it's the shift relay?
Rich

The truck shifts into 4L and 2H no issue. When I select 4H though, all I get is the relay clicking under the oval. I think by the RPO block under the oval in the dash area.

just clicking no light or anything.

I replaced the switch and ohm checked it give out the correct ohm reading. Also replaced the transfer case shift motor.

I'm down the Transfer Case Shift Motor Relay Module/relay or the GEM. Before replacing the GEM I was going to check out the TCSM RElay module/relay since it controls the TCM.

Unless you have another suggestion, please let me know.

Pic is in my 1990/2002 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog..which is on Ford microfiche slides.

Illustration = Section 145 / Page 194.

I just typed this relay part number into FTEpartsguy's site: F65Z14N089AA and it works for me.

Make sure the zero is a zero, and not the letter O.

well I think I found the transfer case shift relay module. Little black box about 2x2.

This is the number written on it. I tried finding it on the parts on that site you posted and also on google but come up with nothing.

F75B-14B194-BB

When I select 4L i can feel it clicking inside the module relay, but when selecting 4H nothing, just the relay in the RPO box clicks clicks clicks.

Thoughts?

Any way I can check if the relay module is working correctly? Bench testing it or something? There are a lot of pins on that module realy.

F75B-14B194-BB.

That number won't work on any Ford site because it's not a part number.

It's an ID engineering number.

The actual Ford part numbers haven't appeared on any parts since 1956.

You haven't contacted FTE parts guy for assistance, I spoke with him twice on Tuesday, he said he hadn't heard from you.

There is NO CHARGE for his help, and you aren't obligated to buy anything.

Can I go the site and use the contact info on it and call there asking for ED. Just mention the site?

Is he just able to help with the finding the right part or is he able to help trouble shoot this crazy issue as well?

Thanks,

I didn't call him someone sent me a diagram with location of the module. I found the module, now just need to determine if it's bad or if it's something else.

Midnightride42,
you said "I replaced the switch and ohm checked it give out the correct ohm reading. "

How did you ohm check the switch? what are those ohm readings? I am having probs and suspect the switch but don't know what it should read. Can you help? Or, anyone?

lpallen 12-23-2008 04:23 PM

I thought I would relay the easy fix to my problem. Maybe it was me being initially stupid, but it might save someone some time and agrivation.

My 4X4 was not engaging (ESOF). The switch on dash didn't seem to do anything. No clicking or anything under the dash. I "thought" I checked the fuses per my owners guide. My owners guide lists fuse 23 as 4WD clutch relay, 4WD/2WD solenoids, and some other stuff. I checked and it was good. I finally convinced myself the switch itself was bad and was asking on this thread for ohm readings for same.

Thank you to Ed at Parr Auto for sending me a TIF document that had all the troubleshoot instructions related to testing the switch. I tested and found the switch was OK. So, I was frustrated.

I was reading the document Ed sent me and realized it began by testing fuse 15, not 23. For some reason, I remembered from a few days ago that I checked fuse 23 when I first started this fiasco. I rechecked my owners guide and sure enough fuse 15 is for the "GEM". Now, I would never have known what a GEM module was before diving through all these threads, nor that it was related to the 4WD. The owners guide did not make it clear that the GEM fuse was related to 4WD.

I checked fuse 15 and it was fine (so I was again frustrated). But, when I plugged it back in, I heard a familiar click under the dash. Since then, the 4WD works fine. I guess the GEM reset or something.

So, the lesson is, there are maybe 3 or 4 fuses in the Insturment panel fuse box (under the dash) related to 4X4. Fuses 15 and 23 are definetly related to the GEM and 4X4 vacum solenoids. There are three other fuses labled GEM/CTM (6, 8, and 20). I don't know what they are for.

I hope this helps someone.

Midnightride42 12-24-2008 07:11 AM

I'll check those fuses, but see I have the relays clickign not like you were you had nothing.

I did find the shift motor module/relay. amd replaced it with one from a 2000, it did the same thing. I also got another transfer case motor that bolted up completely fine, still the same thing.

My guess at this point is the GEM.

I know this is an old thread but i wanted to thank ipallen for posting this... This saved me a lot of headache. I unplugged fuse 15 and heard the same click he did and everything started working again.. I had just replaced my transfer case motor because I thought it had stopped working.. still nothing.. i could hear clicks under dash but no 4x4 light on. after reset, it works fine. I don't know if my transfer case motor was bad but I'm going to leave the new on in. Thanks again for posting.
