89' F150 lift kit
I have a 1989 Ford F150 4x4 4.9L 6Cyl. 5spd. I'm looking for a 4" lift kit that people have had luck with. The Superlift kit looks good, I think they have good lifts for Fords.

I just finished installing a Pro-Comp 4" lift on my '92 Flareside. Everything went well. The directions estimate 10-12 hours for installation. It took myself and a friend about 8 hours (maybe we forgot something). Removing the original pivot brackets was a pain, I wouldn't even attempt it without a cutting torch (I hate drilling rivets). I also had a hard time getting the pitman arm off. I broke the stud on the puller, and while there was still tension on it I cut through the arm with a die grinder untill it popped. The shocks that came with the kit were SHORTER than the ones I took off! But they fit. You may want to buy new trac arm bushings before you get started. Pro-Comp reccomends new Ford parts.
As for which kit to buy, make sure you know the contents of the kit. Most 'kits' are packaged by the retailer and can vary depending on where you buy them. For example, superlift offers at least 3 different ways to lift the rear of your truck; an add-a-leaf, a 2" block, or a 3" block. Some packages include the required pitman arm, some don't. Some include the shocks, some don't. Another thing to keep in mind is that most 4" lifts only lift the rear 2" to eliminate the factory 'raked' look. The kit I used had 1.75" rear blocks, and because my truck sat level before I started, it now looks low in the rear. I plan to add a leaf later. I got the 4" pro comp kit from Summit Racing Equipment For $519. Includes shox and arm. I've seen lower prices in the magazines, but they charge $60 for shipping! Summit has it in stock and on my front porch in two days, with a $5 handling charge. Hope this helps, and good luck! |

I agree that superlift makes a good lift for the Fords (at least they sure think they do). I am by no means a geometry expert, but I do not beleive that their superunner steering kit makes any improvements over the stock steering linkage (except for looks). Actually I think it worsens it. I beleive the best thing you can do is use the stock linkage with a drop pittman arm.
One more thing, Pro comp states that installing the lift will not change the alignment by more than 1/2 degree. It's hard to beleive, but I haven't had mine aligned, and it handles great. I did have to set the toe-in (using a tape measure) and center the steering wheel. |

If I go with the Superlift kit I'll get the Superrunner kit with new radius arms and new rear leaf springs. I'll leave the stock steering and add a drop pitman arm.

Skyjacker is cheaper and better. I have a 6" on my 93 f-150 4x4. I love it to death. I had a 4" superlift and i had so many problems with it. Hope i could be of some help.

If superlift is so bad then would you mind sharing exactly what you have had happen to your 4"? I guess everything I have heard about superlift has been very positive. If you look at those type of kits there really isn't a whole lot of difference between any of them. Im sure 20 years ago it was completely different but I can't see how a company in high standards can suck.

I take it you are a math major? Paul, That works but forklift/bobcat ftw! Newblet, 1- start your own thread next time 2- buy leveling coils 1-2" lift. - $100-120 usually 3- expect your tires to look like this \ / and ride like crap. |

As Kris said, leveling coils up front or if you really are a cheap guy, find you a set of 2wd F350 coils to get a little extra lift up front. Problem with the latter choice is finding a used set that aren't all worn out. Cheapest if to buy new. For the rear, a set of add-a-leaves or find a taller block. The block sucks, but is cheaper than the extra leaf springs. Or if you really are a cheapo, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but a body lift is really the cheapest route. Just don't use the bolts that come in the kit! Go get new grade 8 or better bolts and it will live a much longer and safer life. With that being said, body lifts SUCK! Spend the extra money, go with spring lift and get an alignment. Just expect to be going back more often for the alignment because the TTB's don't really stay in alignment after a lift and offroad use. |
