how to do up a 466

a few of us in the 7.3 forum were wondering if any of you guys had any experience with 466's.

What year is the best; and what needs to be done to hit 1000+hp ??

A few of us, myself mostly, have a hard on for sticking a 466 in a 3/4 ton 4x4.

I don't know much about the DT466, but I was looking through my bookmarks earlier today and found this

Low buck diesel power | turn up your fuel rate for free, or almost

It looks like 93-95 DT466s are the easiest because the injection pump is similar to the one used on the old 12v dodges. Even some parts will interchange.

Just to renew the facts I know about the 466, and there's already 2 other topics on them from Parkalnd, I'll post up.
DT 466 "B" was from 1984ish to 1988/9 with solid lifters, and had the BoschMW inline pump.

DT/DTA 466 "C" was the "roller lifter" model from 1988/9 to the 1993 "NGD" (S/N 85000 and below)Also had the BoschMW pump.

DT/DTA 408/466/530 are all "NGD" varients S/N 85001 and up to EGR (2004 emissions) products. These are the ones with the P-pump like the Dodge 12 valve. They were made from 1993 up to early 97, but the electronic version started in 95, so you have to keep an eye out.

If you're looking for big power on any of the years, the pump will be a limiting factor. They used small 12mm plungers in the pump, and just cant push all that much fuel even with bigger injectors. An injection shop can calibrate it for more flow, or go for one of the sled pulling 13+mm pumps. As soon as I run into a bunch of money, I'll be experimenting with the pump & how to get some action out of it.
Dont worry Parkland, I share your 466 obsession.

id kinda like to do up a huei verson for a superduty. finding injectors wouldnt be too hard id thnk.

Hopping up a 466E isnt too hard, just a little tricky. The IH computer isnt as forgiving as a Ford's. There's a couple plug & play modules out that have a boost fooler built in. Add a set of hot injectors(DIY has done em), then a little bigger turbo, and you're golden.

heck id think it would be alot like hopping up a 7.3 but a tad easier after you figure out the tuning part like you said. My high school career center had a runable one on a stand we used to play with. :-X07

Man this is just the thread i have ben looking for just happend across it. i have been trying to do some researchbut kinda hard i guess not a high demand product but have seen some vids a a guy who has done it and done it good. so your sayin a 95 and later dt 466 would be the best?? who could put togather some tunes for these? one last question for now is what tranny and transfer case could you run with motor. well sorry this is my last question did you say dzljim built some injectors for this rig?? thanks again

93-97 mechanical is top dog. The 466E from 96-03 are not considered much for performance. You CAN, but it's pretty much unchartered waters besides the plug in modules. Did you mean these vids?

From what I've found out, you start with a plug in module, then get bigger injectors(DIY, Extrude Hone, etc) and a better turbo.
The tranny & case combo, just find a trans that has an SAE#2 bellhousing. The transfer case is a little trickier. Options being: for a pickup, a divorced NP205, one from a military Deuce, or you may find something in a truck wrecking yard. Could you be a little more specific as to who you were talking to? I dont know if I just answered a bunch of questions for nothing.

No problem at all, PM away.

I emailed Max from Hypermax about the old mechanical 466s, and he was telling me that you can make just about 600hp without replacing the injectors. Basically, a good pump & turbo(or 2)! :-bigparty

mklemin 12-14-2008 09:17 PM

How much does a set of injectors cost roughly nothing to crazy? i found a website it said from 125 and bu that just sounds way to cheap

nevrenufhp 12-14-2008 09:22 PM

That's about the going rate. The guy that has the 466 in the 74 F250 paid 120ea for his. If you want really huge flowing ones, you can find those used on pulloff.com

Remember the 600 hp comes with a lot more torque than if it were a 600hp pickup engine too. You can get a lot of power out of the old mechanicle dts with the p-pump although the version of the p-7100 on the NGDs is more expensive to modify then say one off a B series cummins. I wounder what bolting a p-pump of a mac E-7 would do for a 466, its suposed to be an E-ticket ride on a cummins.
