rattlecaning my bumpers/mirrors
hey yall, My brackets on my mirrors (the kind that fold out the way) are rusted and my rear bumper is pretty rusted too. I want to paint them, the brackets to match the truck (white) and the bumper black, since I think it'll look better than the grey that it is. I'll probably do the front bumper too. Now my question is what kind of paint should i use, what have worked well for yall in the past. I don't want to spend to much money in this, I'm just tried of looking at rust. I will prep the areas well. Also does anyone know what size torx the screws are on the mirrors.

I think Rustoleum came out with some new stuff (Universal?)... I'm trying to find something here to paint- Jus' to try it out.....:-D

Dupli-Color makes several good auto paint products. AutoZone and Advance sell it. I use Dupli-Color spray cans on the bumpers of my track car. the spray holds up well to the abuse on the road course. My two cents.
I'm considering spraying bed liner coating over my chrome bumpers. What do ya'll think? I'm looking for a more rugged look for my Lariat. I may also add black wheels also. |
I have tried duplicolor on my rear bumper and its fading and the paint is coming off. I think rustoleum would be the way to go.

i think i might try the Rustoleum then. does wally world have it? I'm not to concerned about it fading that bad as long as the paint stays on. I don't like rust on anything, which is my main reason for painting. Any ideas on the torx size?
and to trackcar what kinda of bed liner are you talking about. The one in the rattlecan I have heard aren't worth the time or money, but the diy kits like herculiner works good if you prep it right. I did the dash and interior panels in my old ranger in herculiner and it covered up all the cracks and deep scratches on them. I would actually do it to my bumpers but i don't think i would like the look on a 2wd stock truck like mine. |
So I think i'm going to use either the "heavy rust primer" or the "hammered primer" both of which are for use on heavy rust with the hammered being for covering up stratches and pits from therust. Then i'll just throw some flat black paint on top of that. Any ideas how many cans of primer and paint it would take to do both my rear and front bumper?
|
I tried the hammered paint on an old tool box and it just didn't look good. I'd go with the heavy rust. I'd probably get at least 2 cans per bumper of each type. The spray can bedliner looks like **** and comes off easily.
|
ok, i think i'll go with the heavy rust then, if i can find it. I agree that the spray can bedliner isn't worth the money nor time, but i have had good success with herculiner. I'll probably paint my bumpers in a couple of weeks before school starts, I'll post up some pics when i do.
Thanks yall |

sry 56kers
I painted my rear bumper and mirror brackets last weekend. Thought i would show some pics. I think it looks a 100% better, and I'm interesting in seeing how long it will last. But at least touch-ups will be cheap. you can still see some of the pitts that the rust left, and the dings and dents in the bumper really show up with the black.
