intake for 94 f150 4.9l?
 

hi all,
i have a 94 f150 with the 4.9 300 I6. what is the best aftermarket intake to get? K&N's filter kit is $235+- and only gets like a 5 hp increase. thats $47 a HP. thats too much.:-banghead any help would be awesome.

You're pretty much left with few choices. There generally aren't many aftermarket performance choies for the 300.

That kit and some exhaust work was worth every penny on my old truck. I didn't ever get around to building a heat shield for, but it is something you should consider.

I would spend my money on the exhaust. The stock CAI isn't that restrictive. You can buy a K&N drop in for the stock filter box. My 2 cents.

Maybe my 89 was different, but the air box only had a 1"x5" hole to breath through. The surface area of the hole was nothing compared to the stock filter.

One of the easiest things you can do for a little added power is get air intake temps down. That's not just about bringing cold air in, its also about keeping it as cold as possible before it reaches the engine.

For example, with the outside temps about 95 degrees with the hood open and the engine fully warmed my Roush supercharger datalogs IAT's around 120-130 degrees. If I point an infrared sensor at the filter box its temperature is about 110 - 115 degrees at the furthest point from the engine and nearly 140 degrees at the throttle body. I wrapped the Roush intake tube and the air box with thermal wrap (the kind used to insulate firewalls from heat and sound). IAT's from this dropped any where from 10 - 15 degrees depending on how long the engine is running. Moving the wrap aside and aiming the sensor at the tube shows a corresponding 10 - 20 degree drop in the tube temperature. It's a simple and very inexpensive way to add a little power without using more fuel. :) It looks ugly as hell but it works well.
