157 dollar key

My Wife lost her key to our 05' F-150, went to the hardware store and they said they can't duplicate it and you have to get it from a dealer, called them and they said it's 157 bucks! you gotta be kiddin me, another dealer racket I guess, thats why I like my old trucks you don't have any of that crap. Alright I've vented.

Isn't technology great? A $1.50 key at a hardware store is going to cost you $100 more because it goes to a vehicle.

Ain't technology great, I think you can buy the keys on ebay have them cut then program them... Now I've never tryed this but I been thinking about trying it to have extra keys. I'll have to do some research

They say you can really screw up your ignition if it's not right. I'm gonna live with 1 key for a while, oughta glue the key in the igniton so I can't lose that one.

Hey Guys, I bought two keys on Ebay last year for 30 bucks and a couple of dollars for shipping. I got them cut at the local hardware store, and programmed them myself with instructions that came with the keys. I have four now for my truck, and I was told by the local ford dealer that I could have eight, but that after 8, it starts throwing the first ones out! Please check, as I believe I recall that only one original key is required, not two, but you can program them yourself. ( Lord knows what I did with the instructions, that would clear it up! ) Oh by the way, when you get the key cut, you can test the newly cut key before you program it by seeing if it will turn in the door or tailgate lock.
Remember I got two of them for $30.00! A lot cheaper than $157.00 for one!
I also have a cut, but non-programmable ford key that I keep in my wallet, just in case I lock the keys inside. I can get in the truck, I just can't start it!

I am so glad I can still get a replacement at the hardware store!

believe it or not, the dealer only pay $24 for the key, but charge you guys an arm and leg.

It does not surprise me one bit what a stealership would do. I checked into the ones that are programmable and you need to have 2 master keys already, if I had the 2nd one , I wouldn't need anymore. And they ask me why I drink!!

Find out if you "really" need the second key. Isn't the reason for using the second key to make sure all are programmed the same? Find out if it is absolutely necessary....... a little digging is well worth the trouble to cut out getting used by the dealer!

If you have two keys you can program a third yourself or as many as you want up to I think 7 or 8. The keys have a chip in them and need to be programed to your truck. If you only have one key then you must bring it into the dealership to have it programed. Some of the larger lock smiths are now starting to get a Mobile programmer and can come to you and program the keys or so I been told. Think the dealership charges allot wait till the lock smith shows up.

Just remember, computers are here to make our lives easier!!

immastrokinnow 07-16-2008 04:46 AM

they are charging you for the key plus an hours worth of labor to take ten minutes and reprogram the computer for the new codes inside the chip in the key.
