First Truck - Desicions desicions
 

Alright, i have two options. My grandpa has a 1991 ford f150 with a 351W screw XLT, very nice truck, luxury truck back in the day. My cousin and i have been eyeing this truck since we were barely able to see over the dash.
Option two is a truck for sale near my house, a 1977 f250 ranger, im not sure on the specs yet, but i know it has a 400 motor bored out to 409 with a racing cam, headers, intake and im not sure what else, but the motor is worked. The body is in rough shape, the suspension looks rusted out. I know im jumping around but the motor has about 350 horse, 375ft.lbs. He's asking 1000 but i think i can widdle that down a bit. I dont know which to go for, but the 1991 would be free, i just have to wait possibley a few years....

Well really i would go for the 91 try to keep it in the family and it would have sentimental value to me if i was you but do you want unless you want to put some money and time into the ol F250

yea thats true, but the thing about the f150 is that its coming from my grandpa who is an old grouch, im just gunna say it haha. But the other thing is i need wheels. My b-day is coming up here in a few days so if it doesnt come my way then, i think ill take a closer look at the 250, id still like to hear anyone elses opinions

You know...you could just go ahead and get the 250 and then wait on that 150. Nothing wrong with having 2 rigs!!!!

Yeah never thought of that having more than one truck is nice but can be expensive

Take fuel into consideration as well. The 91' will by far be more efficient than the 77'. Honestly if your a young guy looking for a first vehicle I would get something small and uncool right now, like a car.:rolleyes: Save some $$$ and snatch up the 91' when you get the chance. For $1000 the 77' is more than likely a beater and with a buillt 400M you'll get around 4-5mpg around town if that. Good luck with your first.

i dont like the look of the 77s but do love 91s and free is a hard price to pass up.

Ah yes....I will agree with that.....free is almost always better.

look at my sig...I've two... I cannot justify getting rid of either one. The 87 is sentimental (BS I am told) and there are times when I just need to feel the powah!!!

My 87 was free, from my uncle which he bought new, it had a new motor. But was rotten to the core, I ended up dumping about 4 to 6k into that truck. It was done midway through my senior year of HS.

The 94 ironically...was bought from the IT tech from my HS this December. The body wasn't bad , it had new brakes, needed an oil pan and a clutch. The auto tech class(...which I am sometimes a little embarrassed to be associated with) told the PO it needs a motor...after they FUBARed the entire EEC-IV. Missing wires, double o-ringed fuel injectors, stuck egr valve, and leaking egr tube, upper intake leaks, PCV valve disconnected...the list rolls on. I am doing all engine gaskets except the heads now.
I bought it for $950 and I've put about 1k into it.

So for under 10,000 I have two running driving and decent looking rides...and I am sure there is more to come.

Get your 91, make it run and drive factory, and look decent. Then wait for a deal like or less than that 77 to come along.

Your results may vary...working for a lincoln-mercury dealer sure helps with the price of parts.

As for Gas? I honestly don't care anymore. I make enough to drive 2 gas chugging trucksand keep up with their quirks. Good luck

I'd go for your grandpa's truck. That's exactly how I got mine. I got it free of charge, a 1987 F250 Reg. Cab with a 460ci and a 4spd. I love it to death. He managed to keep it mint condition (except for the paint fade). Only has about 50k miles. I would much rather have a perfect condition truck than one that is falling apart but has some mods.

Just throwing something out there. Don't know if it's a typo or what, but I can't find it anywhere that Ford made a 1991 F150 Crew Cab XLT. F150 for that year only came as Rcab or Scab, no Crew Cab. This must be specialty and rare vehicle. Can you post any pics?

Personally if I were you, I'd get a little fuel efficient car for now, then take over the F150 (especially if it is a crew cab) when you can.

Just bought my first truck. 1991 Chev. 305 V8, 5-Spd standard trans.
BUT~ I'm looking at a 1965 Ranger for my collectible/play around rig.

I'm soooo worried about gas+cost of insurance unsure if it's do-able. May have to get a 3rd job at age 16!!:-huh

I'm in the same boat man, i just turned 17 and all the work around here is low buck... the only good thing is i managed to snag a real good job during the winter so insurance/gas shouldnt be too big a pain in my a$$.
