If you want your Rangers to sound nice here is what you do! You get a header for it, cut your cat off, and then the muffler. Weld on one of those APEXi or ricer mufflers under the truck like before the axle. That way nobody will see your car muffler. Make sure its like a 2 inch or 2¼ size. With at least a 4 or 5in outlet tip. That will sound really deep and won't pop or backfire when you let off the gas! Nice setup. I put this on a dude's 2000 Ranger.:-X21

What is it that makes the exhaust pop on deceleration? I drilled out my muffler back plate and wraped a sheet metal tip around it. Sounds pretty good to me, but does pop sometimes on deceleration, which I don't think I mind, but just wonder why.

Thanks, Makes sense. So on deceleration in gear the fuel is not being fully burned because the throttle plate is closed. Too bad the computer dosen't reduce the fuel input under decel. That would improve fuel mileage.

By the way, is there a trick whereby I can get a good loud backfire out of it (just in case I want to wake up the Ch**y driver in the next lane :-X10 )?

Hehe, I like the idea about waking up those Chevy drivers. :) Actually I had what I feel is kind of a foolish question but gotta ask or else I'd be dumb for not asking. Will adding like Jacobs or MSD ignition stuff help burn more of that fuel being shot into the combustion chamber so to not have that popping sound and wasted fuel going out the exhaust? Thanks for the information.

it might improve fuel mileage but the fuel wont be there when you hit the pedal right away and you risk boiling your fuel in the rail

Don't know of any tricks right off hand, but I remember a friend of mine had an old Honda Motorcycle years ago. You could accelerate quickly, flip off the ignition switch, close the throttle and turn the ignition back on again and it would backfire extremely loud! Scared the hell out of a few people doing that (Grin) I wonder if it would work with a truck? Ok, now I have to experiment. Gotta be careful though, I did blow one of the mufflers off the bike once! Nothing a wrench wouldn't fix though.

on my tempo (and my 2.9 b2) i just ripped the mufflers off (they wer stopped up and i was broke) and they actually sounded really good. i mean to me they sounded great. and the empy cats served as a muffler so i didnt get so loud i got into trouble.
