Heat in tank or in filter
I hear great things about vegetable oil conversions for 7.3 liter PSD's namely "vegistroke". Trouble is vegistroke is high dollar. I found a much more cost effective system but it uses a heating element on the filter instead of in the tank. Does anyone want to predict results or make recomendations... I guess i could alter the kit to heat the tank or both... the link is plantdrive.com check it out tell me what you think

I have both a 12 volt heater on the fuel filter and coolent heater in my tank.
When it's 60 F or less you will need to have heat in your fuel tank. |
I opted for the actic fox coolant heated fuel pickup ($200), wrapped the two 1/2" coolant lines together with the fuel supply line to maintian warmth to prevent gelling throughout the year ($10 for 25' of the R5 plumbing wrap). I also have a 12V heater in the filter (Dahl 100 ~$150) that I can activate with a toggle switch (and I coiled the coolant line around the outside of the filter.) And I recirculate my return line fuel, rather than drump that heated fuel back into the tank.
I didn't want to worry about heating the whole tank, so I opted to heat the pickup tube (and immediately around it). And added a fuel line switch and electric fuel pump immediatly after the stock switch, to direct the fuel to the appropriate filter depending on the tank I am drawing from. |
