IDM mod. Does it work?

Does this really work?

clux 03-30-2008 09:40 AM

I'm sure it works, but it won't work as well as a good chip. Considering a new IDM is $700 or more from the dealer if you screw up your IDM, I think I'd just stick with a chip, $700 will buy a lot of tunes.

A lot of OBS guys do that because their IDM is 120V, ours is 140V.

Izzy351 03-30-2008 09:46 AM

Yeah, I brought this up a while back as well. I got the same answer that superduty just gave. IOW, not worth anything on our trucks.

:-huh I thought the old version IDM was 110V and ours is 120V :-huh

I couldn't remember either ( all that clean living in my youth) so I had to look it up.

Injector Driver Module
The solenoid-operated poppet valve requires 115 volts at up to 8 amps to operate, which is more power than the PCM can supply. Therefore, a high power device, the Injector Driver Module, is used to supply power to the solenoid on command from the PCM.

The sticker on the IDM will identify it. IDM-100, 110 or 120.
It's an IDM-120 on my '01

Maybe so. Either way, the IDM's in our trucks are already running higher voltage, so no need to mod them to increase it any further.

PowerstrokeJunkie 03-30-2008 11:00 AM

The mod will increase our IDMs from 120 to 140. If it was easier to get to like the OBS trucks, i'd get the IDM mod done to mine. Its just a pain to get to.

AustinS 03-30-2008 11:06 AM

If you have a IDM-110 it might be worth a go. I just called a buddy who has a late '99 and his is IDM-120 also. Maybe the early '99 used the IDM-110.
IDM's are indeed pricey, and tuners/chips are a really an easy no brainer install. I'd leave the IDM alone personally. I agree with Clux that $700 buys a lot of tunes.

thanks guys i wasnt sure if i did that with a chip if it would do anything i was just looking at common mods and never really heard anything about that one so i thought i would ask

cookie88 03-30-2008 11:23 AM

It absolutely does work.....especially if you have aftermarket injectors. Almost all of the "hotrod" PSD's you see on the boards and in magazines et.al. run 140v. IDM's. It's just that in most cases they did the mod so long ago they don't even remember to list it as a mod.

Way back when I got to ride in a truck with a switched 120/140 IDM, so I know it makes a difference...but I had never been willing to experiment on my own expensive part, nor had it been high enough on my mod list to pay the premium for somebody else to do it.

That is about to change however....last weekend I scored a 95 F-superduty IDM. As soon as my resistors come in I'll be doing a 140 conversion on it for my truck. So I'll have more better first hand for ya'.

f350rebel 03-30-2008 11:29 AM

i can get an IDM from an early 99 van are they all the same? What kind of power gains are you looking at?

cookie88 03-30-2008 11:35 AM

All the same as in interchangeable? Yes. Any 94-03 IDM will bolt in place of any other. On a stock injectored rig figure the mod is worth 20-25 HP. Not a lot, but enough that you can feel the difference....especially if you get the IDM for nothing. 20 HP is well worth a $.98 resistor.

superduty4x4 03-30-2008 11:54 AM

Where is the IDM in our trucks?

f350rebel 03-30-2008 12:01 PM

can get it fro free and i am getting the 175/146 sticks from swamps so it should be a nice power increase.....will you see more than 20 with after market sticks
