Occasional clunk on take-off

Like the title says, I have an occasional clunk on take-off. Not really bad or excessively loud, but definitely noticeable. It's hard to figure out because it doesn't do it every time, only every so often. My best guess says its the infamous Super Duty clunk, but could it be something in the rear end or even something worse? Would tired gear oil in the diff cause the LS to clunk like this? I'm hoping to grease the slip joint soon to see if it is in fact Super Duty clunk. Is there any need to cut/replace the clamps on the rubber boot when I do this?

IIRC, you have to cut the metal tie off the bottome of the boot. Just replace it with a zip tie when you're done. Check your u joints while you're under there too and grease everything with a zerk fitting.

I've yet to find a single grease zerk anywhere but the steering linkage on the truck, I think that's pretty typical anymore. A zip-tie will seal the boot tight enough?

Remember that there are several sizes of zip ties.

Use a big one.

What I did was to use two of the larger-size, stainless, screw clamps (the ones for fuel lines), screwed together to make it longer.

Are you talking about just a regular screw-type hose clamp, or some kind of special fuel line hose clamp?

If it only does it occasionally and at take off, then it could be a sticky brake. Not as likely with 4 wheel disk, but possible.

The fuel line screw clamps are just like the ones for radiator hoses, just thinner and shorter (smaller).

Has any one ever installed a zerk fitting on that housing. Im thinking @ trying it as its a pita to take that off and grease every 6-8 months.

My 88 f250 had one. Someone mentioned drilling and tapping one in there, but the question was would it put it off balance? I guess you could always put one in, and put another one on the opposite side for balance.

i tried carefully taking off the metal clamps and re-installing them. Let me save you the time of trying and just say zip tie it :)

You may want to check the u-bolts on your steering stabilizer while you are under the truck. I had a "clunk" coming from the front of my F-350 and found that they had worked loose. I replaced the whole thing because I could push the ram in w/ little force, but tightening the bolts would have have fixed the clunk. Good luck tracking down the source of your "clunk".

Thanks slappy, I'll check that as well.
