"How To" High Idle Mod with Upfitter Switches

Here's how I did it:

SUPPLIES:

05 Upfitter Switches & Harness: powerstrokeshop.com
Single Pole Single Throw Toggle Switch for testing: RadioShack
10K Linear Taper Potentiomenter: RadioShack
Knob for pot: RadioShack
2 Auto Relays (30/40 amp with 5 terminals) plus pigtails: Local automotive electirical shop
18 gauge Wire
Solder & Soldering Gun
Wire Crimpers/strippers
Wire ties
Butt Connectors
End Connectors: Male/Female
Parallel Tap Connectors: Male/Female
Heatshrink & Heatgun

*Hook it up temporary on the floor to make sure it works before permanent install. If there are any hang ups, you'll figure them out beforehand. Did this on my 02 F350, so I believe that the wire colors will be the same for all 99-03 powerstrokes. Huge thanks to cef2lion for help on upfitters! High Idle Mod was tweaked from a write-up by Sparky called "AIC MOD".*

STEP 1: Installing Upfitter Switches

1.Remove radio & large cover across dash, glove box, & lower center section (where trash hook & cupholders are). I replaced this section with an 05 panel. You will have to trim the dash a little for a proper fit. If keeping original, refer to rwilimo's write-up to modify it for upfitters.
2.Upfitter relays mount above glove box on pass. side. One hole will have to be drilled in the metal framework.
3.Run harness across dash towards main fuse box connecting ground as you go.
4.Locate white connector with 2 wires (grn/org & org) on the back of the fuse box that matches the upfitter. Unplug & remove both pins. Remember which slots they came from.
5.Remove ltblue/rd (illumination) and vlt/org (power) pins from upfitter connector & transfer 2 factory wire into original locations. Plug connector back in.
6.Tap the illumination wire into same color behind headlight switch by extending it. Extend power wire and connect to Customer Access Wire or CAW (wht/ltblue blunt wire in middle of dash by the blinker relay).
7.Turn key on & test switches & blunt wires for power. Light on switches should come on & blunt wires should have power when up. Turn on dash lights to make sure illumination is working. On powerstrokes, all fuses should be in box already.

STEP 2: Toggle Switch

1.Tap into wht/ltblue CAW & run a wire to 1 side of the switch. From the other side of the switch, run a wire to the same coil terminal of both relays. From the other coil terminals on both relays, run a wire to the parking brake wire (ltgrn/rd) & tap into it.

STEP 3: Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

1.Look at the pedal & you'll see a plug with 5 wires going to it (red/green, red/yellow, brown/white, grey/white, & yellow/white). The ylw/wht wire WILL NOT be used. Carefully untape them so you have 6-8 inches to work with. Disconnect the plug from the TPS.
2.Cut RED/YELLOW wire 3-4" from plug & install end connectors on both ends. Ran a wire from wire bundle side to the common term of 1st relay. Run a wire from the plug side to the Normally Closed (NC) term of same relay.
3.Run a wire from the Normally Open (NO) term on same relay & tap into the RED/GREEN wire by the TPS plug.
*This will use all the terminals on the 1st relay.*

STEP 4: 2nd Relay & the Other Wires

1.Cut BROWN/WHITE wire 3-4" from plug & install end connectors on both ends. Run a wire from bundle side to the common of the 2nd relay. Run a wire from the plug side to the (NC) of the relay.
2.Run a wire from the (NO) of the relay & connect it to the left term on the POT (looking from shaft side with terminals down. Writing should be right-side-up if there is any).
3.Run a wire from the center term of the POT & tap into the GREY/WHITE wire by the TPS plug.
*DO NOT solder wires to pot until you know it works!*
4.Make sure bare connections are not touching & reinstall TPS plug.

STEP 5: Test & Permanent Install

1.Start vehicle & idle normally for 30 sec to 1 min.
2.Set parking brake and flip toggle switch to on. If motor rev's high, turn shaft on POT in other direction to lower. If RPM's don't change, turn shaft other way & they should rise. If nothing changes RPM, then check all connections. If RPM's stay too high, then you'll need a 50K POT as there's not enough resistance.
3.I mounted the relays with an 'L' bracket next to the main fusebox on the lower metal dash support with an existing hole.
4.Wanted #4 of upfitters to run mod, so I unplugged the white connector from fusebox & removed the corresponding pin for #4 (SOLID RED wire). The blunt wire for #4 is ORANGE/LTBLUE on the upfitter harness. Hook these 2 wires up just like they are terminals on the SPST toggle.
5.Mounted the POT upside down in same metal support as relays on the far right side using an existing hole. Soldered wires onto it before putting in place. Installed knob on shaft for adjusting. I can reach down & adjust it to a desired RPM without anyone ever seeing it. I heatshrinked all connections as I went.
FINALLY: Once everything is tied up out of the way and mounted, start vehicle & test again. Should work just like before. Reinstall all dash panels removed earlier & ENJOY!

*I used wiring diagrams for both my 02 & the upfitters. Helped a ton! Still have them if anyone needs them.*

It is long & detailed, but hopefully it helps someone looking to do these 2 mods together with limited or no experience. It makes for a very clean install without using any aftermarket toggle switches.

If someone can help me figure out how to add pics into this post, I'll redo it. Otherwise they'll be in my gallery tonight.

Very nice write up. Rep points to you.

F350-6 03-13-2008 06:31 PM

Great job with the instructions. Can you post any pictures? I love pictures. Also if you have a scanner you can scan the wiring diagram into a pdf format and attach it to this post so when we all bookmark it we have everything we need.

Apparently you're one of the few people I'm allowed to spread the reps around to so they've been given.

Thanks guys!! It took a while to figure out with alot of trial and error, but it finally came together.

As far as attaching a pdf file to the post, I'm not sure how to do that. It says that I "may not" post attachments down at the bottom of this thread page. I'm guessing that goes along with pictures as well. Can you guys help with this so I can add them into the post?

Thanks,
Strokersace

Finally got my pics into my gallery. Under upfitters.

Thanks Cookie!! Got a question... Would like to post pics directly on here, but I can't find the "Browse" button on the page nor will it let me to add attachments. I've posted everything in my gallery, but thought I'd add some on here. Any ideas on how to do this? Do I need to be a member of Club FTE?

Thanks,
Strokersace

You mean like this?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...181471.520.390

Make sure you're in the Go Advanced page or Preview Post page (not the quick reply) Then you can either scroll down below the box where you type and click on Manage Attachments. A new window pops up with the browse button to attach photos out of your computer, or what I did here is view your gallery in a different tab or window and right click on the picture and select copy image location (I use firefox browser for the spell check feature. IE may have different wording) Then when you get to the place you want to insert the picture click on http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...nsertimage.gifat the top of the box you're typing in. If you hold your pointer over it, it says Insert Image. When you click a window pops up. Just paste the image location you copied from your gallery and hit ok.

I hope that made sense.

Chris- THANKS!!! For the help! I don't get this option in the advanced page or the preview post. It could be because I haven't got my membership yet. Absolutely no "manage attachments" below where you type.

I was, however, able to copy them from my user gallery and paste them into text, just as you did. Do you have any idea how to add in the pdf's of the diagrams? I tried opening them up using my internet browser and then adding the link to it, but couldn't get it to work. Any suggestion?

Thanks again!
Ryan

Wow, nice writeup. Reps on the way. I think I will stick with the chip hi idle for now, but that is what I would do if I needed one. Great post.

THANKS!! Took some time but worked out exactly like I wanted it to. I hear ya on the chip high idle. I had a 4 position on my '95 with high idle and it was nice. But since I went with the Edge products with this '02 and still wanted the high idle, I opted for the dash panel replacement and the upfitters. I was happy with how clean it looks. Now all I have left to do is get it painted up to match the rest of the dash. Taking the truck by the paint place on Wed. to get it matched.

Ryan
