Well I got everything done....bed floor, aligned it.....etc...etc
I also got the coker firestone military tires for it installed and drove it around a good bit yesterday (it runs stops and handels pretty well for a cobbled together pile of junk parts). The only thing left to do before I get it inspected and start driving it everyday is to go over everything and make sure that everything is tight and to be sure that I didnt' miss anything. Very cool and impressive build, good job! Hope to see some pictures of it this winter trudging through axle deep snow. Something I can show my '51 as it cowers in it's garage hiding from the cold.

Well it is on the road and inspected.
I clocked quite a few miles already and am getting near 30 MPG highway!!!!! It is underpowered while climbing the mountain on my way home from work so I do end up having to downshift to 2nd and rev it up the mountain 5 miles under the speed limit....but I can live with that to get the mileage it gets. if I wana go faster I just take a different truck. I offroaded it a bit and the military tires do quite well offroad. I will try to remember to snap some pics this winter ocne the snow gets deep. |

Well I have racked up almost 5,000 miles so far and it has been very reliable, fun to drive, and gets great mileage....sold my last "late model" a few months ago so this is my daily driver now.
The 4wd works great, I have been using it offroad and in the snow a good bit. I rebuilt the vacume wiper mechanism to that point that is works well even in the snow and added an electric window washer out of a early 60's ford.....it has a vintage look that matches the truck (it is the old bag style). I also added a port under the dash that a MP3 player plugs into so now I have music and everything his hidden. All the guages except the temp guage now work. It has a new headliner. I also added vintage looking sholder seatbelts and made some other improvements here and there. |
i like the look and stance of your truck, (i like tall skinny tires)
but i gotta ask. how do those NDT (non-directional tires) ride? oh, after they cold flatspots warm up and go away. |
They ride pretty good and don't noticeably flat spot.
I am down to 29 PSI in them and and happy with them. |

It is not nice enough to enter in any car shows but I will drive it out to spring carlise, fall carlise and hershey as well as any other local swap meets..etc..etc.

The tires are about half worn so they seem to be wearing quite well. the heater keeps up well in sub zero temps but doesn't defrost the side windows and I get a big draft from the passenger door bottom....there is a big dent there....this spring I will have to weld some nails to it to try to pull the dent out with a claw hammer. The windshield washer setup is working nicely and the rebuilt vacuum wiper assemble is adequate. |
i like your truck thank god my 59 converted to 4X4 easier i have a 61 frame with 63 axels but it works lol. great truck the color and stance kinda reminds me of an old dodge powerwagon my dad used to have that i played in all the time when i was a kid.

I finally found some older lockout hubs for the truck.

Couple questions: 1) How are the military tires on road? I was thinking about a set for my F-5 (waaay down the road) but was concerned about treadwear and ride... 2) How are the upper half of the seatbelts attached? 3) Any chance you would be willing to part with your spare '48-'50 style grille (if you havn't already)? Mine's missing a couple of the bars. |
