67-72 Factory AC Unit Avilable

Hey All - Any of you guys with a 67-72 Ford, one of my buddies will have a factory AC Unit for sale at the March 9th swap meet. It has all the brackets, compressor, condensor, controles and air box. It is in good shape but is missing the evaporator core and the hoses which you could find or have made. I put one of these in my truck and it was not that bad of a job and it is a lot cooler in the summer!

Does that use R-134a or the old R-12? Does it make your truck run hotter? Do you know about how much he wants for it?

Jake:

You would probably need to replace the Compressor. These systems were designed to run on R12 but you can switch them over to R134. I used R12 in mine because I still have some and they cool better when they are at idle than the R134. The old york compressor just doesn't keep the pressure as high as it needs to be at idle that R134 needs to cool as well. My system with R12 will freeze you out of the cab when its 110 out side plus i can hear the radio now when I am running down the highway. It does make my truck run a little warmer but it does not get hot. I am not sure what he wants for it, but I am guessing you could pick it up for under $150 and maybe less.

Hey George,
Trying to find that A/C setup at the swap meet was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Anyway, do you know if he still has it or if he got it sold? If he still has it and the price is right I may be interested.....

Jake:

He still has it and it didn't sell. I think the price is right. It is missing the condensor and expansion valve and the hoses. I think I know where there are some hoses and a condensor so that you could have a complete set up. What size engine are you putting it on Jake?

jseim44 03-18-2008 08:08 PM

It would be going on my 390......in my '69. Buying refridgerant isn't an issue for me now. I had to take the ASE test for school that says I know how to properly handle the stuff, so I'm good to go. It's just finding R-12 might be a bearcat.....If you know where I can get everything at a reasonable price I think I'm down with that (or is it 'up for it'.....I just can't know....)

-Jake

EDIT - Something I just thought of......I only have a 2 groove pully on my balancer as I only have PS and the alternator/water pump to run right now. I assume the A/C compressor is run off of the crank pully......?

gquinn8516 03-18-2008 09:30 PM

Jake - It takes a 3 groove pulley but he may have that. If not, again I think I know where one is at. I bet you can get all that he has for $75 I will see if I can get some pics and can do a little inventory on what is there and what is missing. R12 is hard to find in 1 lb cans but there are a few shops out there that still have some kegs of it. I still have some but I just can't part with it - its like GOLD! Of course if you want a 30 lb Keg of it I still have some that I would sell;)

Well if between the two of you everything I need is there I am very interested in seeing everything and finding out what he wants. Let me know.

I called him Wednesday Jake and he does not have the pully but I will do some shoping at my favorite mall - The Junk Yard - and see what I can come up with. He will take $75 but not sure what the junk yard guy wants. I paid $125 for mine and that was everything. By the time I got a new compressor, made a new hose, new fan motor, rebuilt the air box I had about $450 in it - A lot less than the $1200 Vintage air wanted.

OK, sounds good. Let me know!!!

Jake:

I have the AC Unit in my posession. It is missing the Alternator Pulley, the 3 groove pulley, 2 of the hoses and the 2 idler pulleys and mounting brackets, the switch on the unit, the evaporator core and the expansion valve.

What it does have is the Air Box (what goes in the cab), the controles with cables (that go in the dash), 1 Hose, the condensor, the compressor and all brackets, and the 2 steel lines that hook to the condensor. The Air box is in pretty good shape

You would have to probably replace the compressor and have the hoses remade which can be done. Like is said before I may know where some of the missing things may be located but again you would have to barter for that. I think the best thing you could do would do would be to stop by and see me in Kearney some time, look at what I have and what is missing and make an offer. I think you could get it pretty resonable. You could also look at my truck so that you can see what you need.

Let me know if your interested.

George,
I will PM you when I have time to make a trip to Kearney. That sounds like a good idea. I was all hyped up to finish this thing, but then my priorities shifted (again) to buying tools while I still get a student discount. I'll come see what you have and make an offer though.

Jake:

If you settle in or around Kearney after school just come and see meI'll still give you a deal on your tools. By the way - We are having a tool Sale May 5 - 9th.

George

jseim44 04-06-2008 08:22 PM

What tools do you sell?

-Jake

gquinn8516 04-06-2008 09:35 PM

Jake:

I manage the Kearney and Minden NAPA Stores. My group owns the Kearney, Hastings, Aurora and Minden NAPA Stores. I'm not sure what school your going to, but if its Hastings CCC, we sell a lot of the tools there.
