Inside door handle won't open door - 1992 F-150
 

When I lift up on the inside door handle the door doesn't open. What could be the problem? I'm thinking it may be the cable but not sure.

Can someone point me to a diagram that shows the inside of door. I'm thinking I'm going to have to pull out the door latch and if parts fall out it would be good to see how things work.

Before you get real involved, remove the door panel and see if a tear in the metal where the handle bolts on is not your problem (fairly common one). Follow this link:

A tear would make sense. I'll be sure to check that out. I was thinking maybe the cable was stretched, if that's possible I don't know.

I'll use my camera to take some pictures inside the door. It has video mode so I can record what happens inside when I lift the door handle.

Try lubricating it, that worked for my 92

The inside door handle attaches to the (Ford nomenclature) "door remote control and link assembly."

Attached to the remote control by a plastic clip...is a long rod that actuates the door latch.

The USUAL causes of handle failure:

The door remote control has a small coil spring inside that can break.

Or...the most common reason why the door won't open > > >

On each end of the rod, is that **&%^ plastic clip (there are 2) that hooks the rod to the remote control on one end, to the latch on the other. The little darlins' break apart from age.

I'll betcha it's one a those clips...available from any parts store, or FoMoCo.

Yea i had a tear just fixed it with a Bolt Nut And a Big Washer !!

I'm working on my 1994 F-150, the passenger door handle won't open so I took off the door panel and pulled on the handle to see if I could get it too work, it just snapped off leaving a big hole.. what can I do??

I take it you're referring to the whole assembly pulling out, ripping the metal, and leaving a gaping hole?..

If so, welding is about the only way to repair it that I know of, short of replacing the whole door....

If you do weld, take it SLOWWWWWWW....Good solid tach welds, that literally fusing the loose piece of metal, with the door shell metal...

That was the first idea in my head, but I don't own a welder. Nor does anybody I know. I've welded on my truck before, but I used my school's welder, and I'm on winter break. Should I just leave it for the next 2 weks until I have access to the welder?

Sounds like you don't have much of a choice.....

A shop would do the repair fast and cheaply......I would guesstimate about $25-ish dollar repair to have a shop actually weld it in....Mig welder is the ticket...:-X22

Alright well thanks for the help, hopefully after break I can repair it and everything will be good.

I just cut a piece out of another door and sheetmetal screwed it over the old. No need for welding.

Minor trimming may need to be done, but it can be done without welding

I had the same problem on work truck. I just redrilled the mounting hole and moved the threaded clip over. Presto-fixed and didn't have to weld it(though that was a possibility).

I think the tear comes from too many people using the door handle to pull it closed? Or using too much force to open the door? Maybe the guts gets stiff and you have to pull harder? I've owned two trucks and not had this problem. They both would open with just the lightest pull and I used the arm rest to close them. These trucks are so freak'n air tight you really have to wing the door to get it to fully latch if the windows are all closed. Keep saying......"can't wait for the cab to rot out so the doors will close" LMAO!!!!

My truck is an old animal control vehicle, 215,000 miles haha. I'm pretty sure the handle's had its share of abuse over the years. I had my dad look at it and he said get a small peice of metal, drill a hole in it for the screw and put it on the opposite side of the metal of the door so it will hold, I'm sure this will work.
