Transmission Swap C6 TO AOD

Good Afternoon All

I'm looking to put an AOD on my 78 Ford Truck with a 351M in it. It originally had a C6 in it and it finally is going to need to be rebuilt so i decided to look into an AOD for it. I hear that I need an adapter kit for it. Where can I get this from? What else should I know before doing this?

Thanks

William

Here is a link to one. Kind of spendy. Also, remember the AOD tranny was made for the 302s. So even a 351M may be too much for the AOD and without some upgrades, it might burn out in a short period of time, unless you drive pretty carefully.

Take my advice, I have a lot of experience with AOD/Es.... Having owned a modded turbocoupe, and knocking a few out..... They can barely handle FACTORY power, let alone more. Just going from 6-17psi of boost on a factory IHI turbo on a TC (TINY turbo) is enough to knock one out. One AOD I had in a TC had only 60k factory miles on it, and it had been babied, and the fluid/filter done every 20k, and it died at 70k miles. I had a SN95 mustang 302 with headers, full engine back catless exhaust, jet chip, and some ignition work that was preparing to do one in.... The C6 can handle a pretty large amount of power. Rebuild it, or get another one, they are a dime a dozen man.

I have a 2:75 rear end anyway so i'm hoping to get good gas mileage once i rebuilt my carb. Everything about the engine is original. Do you have any ideas of what else i could do to get better gas mileage?

Try a gearvendors unit.

gear vendors might seem like a lot of $$ - that is until your truck eats and AOD or 2. At $1300-1500 or so for a rebuild the AOD's add up quick. I for one will NEVER run one again!

To have an overdrive trans AND 2.75 gears... You will be lugging your motor so badly your fuel economy will actually decrease!

fastfarmer 02-11-2008 11:04 AM

I aree, with 2.75 you have now there is not much more to be gained in that department. Keep it tuned up and running well, that truck is not going to be a miser on gas no matter what you do.

lentech automotive. bell pattern will dictate that. Another thought is a ZF5 speed. Unless you need an auto....I'd stay with the C6. My 2 cents.

Do a search. I am pretty sure an E4OD from a 460 will bolt to a 351M since it has the bellhousing bolt pattern, and can handle the power. The downfall is that you will need to purchace a stand alone computer to control the shifts!

Thanks everyone

I think for now i'll stick with getting my C6 rebuilt. It doesn't sound like an AOD is the way to go with a 351M.

E40D is a much better tranny than the A.

It is still an expensive turd, compared to just about any 3 speed non OD trans. It takes big money to update, and upgrade an E4OD to handle power, and to last any kind of great distance without gernading. It is computer controlled, so you have to modify your engine, and buy a special computer to make it shift (or a full manual valve body) Light duty use, Pray for 100K of service, towing, be darned lucky for 100K. Fluid changes, external filter, and keeping the temps down are key to any overdrive transmission's survival.

quick question. i only have a 302, but was thinking of putting an AOD behind it. i have a c4 currently and was hoping the AOD would be a better choice for fuel economy. not really worried about power dont plan on doing any towing. always thought the aod was a better tranny, but from what you guys are saying that is not the case. and not that i think it is going to matter much but have 3.5 gears.

what do you think?
