should I trade my 01 f250 for 04 f250 w/6.0?

Suggestions anybody? I have an 2001 extended cab f250 4X4 V10 with 101,000 miles, I love it but it gets 11 mpg pullin or driving. I am looking at a 2004 f250 crew cab 4X4 with a 6.0 diesel, automatic with rear airbag suspension and 130,000 miles. nice clean truck too. crew cab would be nice to haul my buddys to the races and the mileage should be better shouldnt it? I am just looking to see if its really worth it getting the 6.0 diesel, any problems with them? just looking at my options. thanks

I have a '01 PSD with the 7.3. You should improve your fuel mileage with the diesel. In the winter with winter blend I get about 13-15 mpg when not pulling. In the summer I'll get 17-20 mpg on longer runs when not pulling. With a fifth wheel camper I get about 11-12. You need to look at a bunch of things when looking at a diesel such as the additional cost of diesel, higher oil and filter(s) cost and initial cost of the diesel. If you get a diesel, you love the power. The early 6.0's had some problems, but a late '04 should be ok.

Yeah I have noticed the cost of the diesels, they sure do hold their value alot better even with high mileage....hum...my V10 does have a good amount of power too though. I sure am leaning towards a trade but want to make sure that I dont screw up, it could be costly....

It really depends. If you want a different truck then go for it. I went from an 02 V10 to an 04 PSD. The PSD has gobs more power and torque but the V10 wasn't that bad either. Mileage... Yeah it is higher but I am not sure that I am much better off since I don't get the mileage that some do (although that is probably do to my driving habits) and fuel is more money then gas right now. Oil changes are simple on these 6.0's and you can go further between changes. Fuel filters are rediculously priced unless you get the part numbers and go by them from an IH big truck dealer (about 1/2 cost of Ford). You need additive in the winter and/or to plug them in on really cold nights. Just some things to think about. Don't get me wrong, I seriously doubt that I go back to gas anytime soon but I thought you might want to hear some other considerations before you make a decision.

Okay, here's my .02. I have an '06 6.0. I only have 21,000 on it, but it runs great, no problems so far. Mileage wise, at 65 on a level highway, it gets around 20-21 (3.73 rear), and with my 4000lb boat on the back, it will get around 13 at 65-75mph. Find out what gears are in it, that will effect the mileage. I'd get an OASIS report on it also, just to make sure it hasn't had any previous issues. I know Ford has some problems early with the 6.0's, but I think after 05, they were pretty much resolved. It wasn't on every motor, either. A lot of guys haven't had problem one, while others live in the shop with repairs.

IMHO, you can't beat the diesel. Yeah, gas and maintenance is higher, but I think it's worth it, mileage, durability, and resale wise. Okay I'll put away my soap box now!

Dang Pat I am going to have drive his truck for a day to see if hes telling the truth about the mileage. I still dont believe him.JK I have a 2003 PSd with the 7.3 an has been a great truck. Remeber it has over 130,000 miles so your on your own as far as repairs go.
Some 6.0s are great like great an some had some serious issues. I dont have one but I have firends that do some have had good luck an some have trouble. Check over on the 6.0 forums an check there. Should help you out a bunch.

Yeah, I've been very happy with the mileage, but remember, that's in the summer, on a flat and level interstate. It will drop pretty good when you hit the hills, down to 16-17 on the hills.

Thanks for all of the information guys, it has opened my eyes a little better (maintence wise). I thought the 6.0s had problems early in 2003 but the late 2003 6.0s were ok. I havent heard of anything really going wrong with them in 2004.

UPDATE, well I did it! I Traded my 2001 f250 ext. cab 4X4 V10 with 102,000 miles for a late 2003 powerstroke lairet 4X4 crew cab. Man this thing seems huge! I love it. My good friend is a mechanic at the place that I got it at (ford dealer in Kenesaw, Neb.), and he went all through it and everything is good. They are real nice people there, I highly recommend that place. Anyways this 03 has 89,000 miles on it and its nicccceee...we will see how all of this pans out over time. Thanks for all of the info.
Headed to Cali at 4am to "work," be back in a week and a half or so....enjoy the COLD!!

husker 01-31-2008 09:37 PM

Congratulations on the diesel. You'll love the power when towing and the SD's are great trucks. Is the engine the 6.0? I'm assuming since it is a late '03 that it is the 6.0.

iwillflybyu 01-31-2008 10:39 PM

thanks, yeah its got the 6.0 in it. I am just gonna have to get used to plugging it in at night and I hope that I dont drive off with the extension cord on accident

150ford 01-31-2008 11:29 PM

Yeh dont do that. Ive done that once not good. Good luck on the truck youll love it. Whats the name off that dealer in Kenesaw. Ive seen it in Wheels for you. Just cant think off it. Do you know who the former owner is since you bought it locally. I did on my current PSd an he was a big help. OK one more thing. PICS,PICS,PICs. I wanna see this thing.

iwillflybyu 01-31-2008 11:36 PM

I will get some pics as soon as we buy another digital camera. The other day I was taking pictures of my new race car then forgot something in the shop, so I set the camera down on my tool box of my 2001, then went for a little drive and found it later on the road..... Yeah, it got smashed, heck I only used the darn thing about 4 times. So I will get pics up, I promise, sometime that is. Kenesaw Motor Company is the name of the place, the dealer there is really nice, his name is John. Anyways the pickup came from a guy in Blue Hill who took it in to get new ball joints put in her and he saw a bran spankin new King Ranch, and he left with it. This pickup was a one owner so hopefully everything is good...seems to be so far but I have only had it about 6 hours. We will soon see after i get back from Cali.
