Carb's How Many?
 

I have a recently rebuilt 8BA with a stock camshaft. I recently aquired a three two barrel intake manifold. Question is would two carbs be too much for the stock cam?? How about all three. Would be using basically stock carbs. What kinda problems would I encounter?

Two 94's or 97's are all a stock engine will handle. Thats 165 or 150 CFM per carb for a total of 330 or 300 respectively. If you go to a 4 bbl, the Holley 390 is all you want up there.

More that that is wasted fuel and poor performance. You just can't jet them down enough. But at wide open throttle they perform well - it's just the around town, streetablity that suffers.

Go to two carbs and you have to run them at the same time - you can't use progressive linkage or you'll burn valves.

Options: block off the middle carb and run two OR run all three with the center one as your primary carb and the front and rear to come in only at 3/4 throttle. It'll take some fiddling and will probably run rich. But they look so sweet with three duces!

Thanks, MTFlat. That sweet look is what I would like. Not building a drag machine, just a neat driver.

I am boring my flathead and the performance shop advise me to go to two carbs for better all around performance with out constantly doing adjustments, this truck will be a garaged vehicle run only for show and go, not a daily driver.

im going the same route with mine you still have to fiddle with the carbs to make it so you run on the 2 carbs and then at say 3/4 throttle the third kicks in. otherwise 2 cylinders will run lean as the rest run rich. other option that guys do is block the center carb completely and run the motor off the other 2 carbs (depending on what intake you have for fuel distribution, some are better than others)
