08 F250 Diesel Mpg
I purchased the 2008 PSD 4x4 long bed and am getting horrible gas mileage. I drove accross the States towing my 11,000 lbs trailer and got about 7 MPG. Driving it now around town without towing I am getting about 11 MPG. I traded in my 01 F250 Triton V10 because it got between 7 and 10 MPG towing or not. I thought Diesels got great gas mileage. I love this truck but the MPG is killing me. I currently have 7500 miles on it. Any suggestions?????? http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...cons/icon8.gif Help!!

wait til about 15k miles, mileage should improve...but i don't think it will ever be as good as the 6.0 and definitely not as good as the 7.3
|
Did you check the diesel forums on FTE? I know the 6.4L hasn't been out too long, but I've been reading horrible mileage threads for a while.
|
I get 15 with a stock 7.3 doing mixed driving with a 350 DRW so its not all Diesels the new ones though seem to suffer from excess sucage on the mileage front.

I've heard there is a reflash for the computor that is suppose to improve mileage and tranny shifting? I will be taking my 08 PSD in soon for 1st service and will be inquiring about this reflash. I am only getting 10.5 mpg mixed driving...

I think everyone needs to get over the MPG thing on the new diesels. I have just over 7k and I still dont get any better than 12.4mpg. If everyone wanted a gas saver, maybe this truck wasnt for them.

Thread moved to the 6.4L forum ;)

You might try looking for an 07 6.0, which will get better mpgs and still be reliable being the latest year of that engine. What we are seeing right now is a similar effect as when leaded gas was phased out, anyone remember the 400 CID smog motor? It too had lots of potential, but the changes in emissions killed it dead. My guess is that in the next 5 years mpgs will go back up, since imports stand ready to eat the lunch of whats left of the BIG 3, either that, of diesels will fall out of favor with the public again...... |
If I was you I would be telling people to get over the whole MPG thing on the 08 too. Your getting 12.4. I was lucky to get 7!!! Thats quite a difference for the same truck. Diesels are know for getting better MPG. Research? Nobody said anything about the MPG on the 08 when it first came out. The only people who say anything about the MPG are the current owners. The truck has got outstanding reviews form all the magazines. I love my truck. It is the best truck I have ever owned. I just think the MPG could be alot better and shouldn't vary so much from owner to owner.

Am I missing something here? ruley2 shouldn't complain about crappy fuel mileage... Because why?
Hopefully the 6.4 owners will get better mpg as their engines break-in just as a lot of other light duty diesels have in the past. It seems to be the only complaint 6.4L folks have with their trucks. Although there are some reports of excellent mpg of 18-20 mpg highway. IMO short trips kill mpg and might be increased as wider viscosity oils (5W40) properly rated for the 6.4L become available in the near future. |
If the other engines can haul your load what then becomes the motivating factor in buying the diesel. Used to be the diesel could pay for itself over time because of the mileage, and had more power. It still has more power, but how many people are pulling a load that the other engines can't pull, and now it costs more??? I think ruley2 probably represents a number of diesel owners.

I'm getting about 18 and 14 as per the cumputer, I havent checked it myself in about 3,000 miles but when I did the cumputer was not that far off. I have around 7,000 on my truck. I havent towed yet but considering that I was getting 8 hyway from the dealer, I'm happy and it might get better.
I did not by this truck for gas milage. |
My 06 F250 6.0 has 4" exhaust & Bully Dog Intake and programmer. I tow a 12000 lb 5th wheel. When towing I get about 10 and about 17 when unloaded on the highway. Commute traffic kills my mpg. These things are HEAVY! Free breathing intake and exhaust made a difference of about 2 mpg unloaded on the highway.
