Max. towing weight for 2005 F-150?
 

The truck is a 2005 F-150, screw, 4x4, 5.4, 5.5 bed, towing package,
3.73 gears, 17 in wheels, 33 in tires, leveling kit, Volant-CAI, Magna-flow exhaust.

I have read that a 05 with towing package will tow 9100 lbs max. is that right?

I have a thread going in the towing/trailers form - Questions about towing a 78 F-150 with a 2005 F-150.

I have gotten some good answers and they have said that the 05 truck should not have any problems towing 9000 lbs if I take it easy.

I will be towing an open trailer with a 78 F-150 4x4 on it, (about 9000 lbs total). This will only be a one time tow.

The trip will be 4 hours on the way up with just the trailer with 4 miles of 5% grade uphill and 4 hours on the way back with 5 miles of 10% grade downhill.

What kind of weight have you towed with your 2005?

I have the same truck, I think the max towing weight is 7200lbs

although, one time, 9000lbs shouldn't hurt anything (famous last words)

use advice at your own risk :)

The GVWR is 7200 lb's, meaning weight of truck plus load in truck.
The GCWR is 15,000 lb's, meaning whatever the truck weighs with load, and trailer weight with load, when combined can be as much as 15,000 lb's.
The maximum towing capacity is 9200 lb's, properly equipped, mean you better not have any extra weight in the truck other than a driver.

I just noticed the 33" tires. That will reduce the capacities by a bit.

last5oh- I am not sure of the exact trailer weight/length. My friend who owns the trailer is out of town so I can't ask him. He has a concrete business and uses the trailer to haul his Bobcat, tools, forms, bags of concrete etc.
I think it is 20-25 ft, so I am thinking it ways about 3000 lbs dry?

The 78 F-150 weighs about 5500-6000, it has 35" tires and he is giving me 2 doors. I figure 6000 lbs total.

So with me and my friend in the truck on the way back, we should be close to
GCWR, if my numbers are correct.
I will try to borrow his 3500 Duramax that he tows it with, would make it alot easier.

I am not really even sure the 78 will fit though the fenders of the trailer. The truck has 35" tires and I measured it while I was there.

I may be off a couple inches- 84" wide, 83 " tall , 18 ft. long.

I will get the details of the trailer when my friend gets back in town.

I have an 04 screw 4x4 with 3.55 gears and the 5.4 motor with superchips tuner and dual exhaust.I normally tow between 2,000 to 3,000 pound's on a regular basis and it handles it with no problem.I recently bought some property and i'm getting ready to build a house on it.My cousin has a case skid steer with track's on it and a 18ft equipment trailer.The skid steer weigh's 8,000 pound's full of fuel and the trailer weigh's 4,800 pound's,that come's 12,800 pound's plus figure in the weight of the truck at around 6,600 I think.That bring's the total gross weight to 19,400,I only had to go about 10 mile's from his house to my property there was one big hill that was fairly long and curvy going down it I definately needed better brake's and going back up it I had my foot on the floor the whole up and she was screamin it was all it wanted.It did the job and even gained a little speed going up it,I didn't get a run at this hill because at the bottom was a sharp curve I was going about 20 mph at the bottom and at the top it got up to about 35 mph before it started to level off. The truck done job but I wouldn't to tow that much very far or very many time's it worked the tranny very hard especially on take off and I would definately better brake's and suspension.

65 f100; I'm sure your truck would handle that fine. I'm also sure Ford has to go somewhat conservative on ratings and capacities to protect their arse, liabilty wise.

There's a fellow on another board that has pulled that much weight with a 4.6, 3.55 gears with tow package, and he thought it handled it quite well.

lol.... you're up near the max towing capacity of an F350 with a diesel.

I have a 04 fx4 with 5.4 3 valve not sure of the gears. but I will tell ya I have a 32' pull behind camper and it weighs 7200 with out water and gear. I bought this camper in ohio and towed it 250 miles to pa across hilly interstate and I set the cruise at 70 and at times i forgot the darn camper was there. no kidding these trucks pull like train. ps... I did have a load leveler which helped the hitch weight. just my experience no prob.

evl150- 19,400 lbs now that is a load. How bad did it sag/bottom out?

last5oh- The 2005 is owned by a friend of mine so I just wanted to be sure about everything. If it was my truck I wouldn't hesitate.

I am a newbie to towing. The only thing I ever tow is my 12 ft jon boat with my 65 F-100. I am buying the 78 as a hunting rig but it will be nice to have something that I can tow with on those rare occasion's.

I have thought about getting a newer truck as well but I just don't tow enough to justify it.

Note to self: find more things to tow to justify expense of new truck.

The truck didn't sag all that bad considering the weight I had,I loaded it to the rear of the trailer centered over the trailer axle's so the tongue weight wouldn't be so bad.I forgot to add that I have a 2 inch leveling kit on the front.like I said I wouldn't want to do it very often or for very far.My biggest worry was the brakes because I don't have a brake controller for the trailer brakes so I took it real easy.I was impressed with the motors performance considering the weight and the 33 inch tire's probably make my 3.55 gear ratio somewhere in the 3.30's range.I've been thinking about swapping to 4.10 gear's an extra leaf in the rear and a brake controller It would've been much easier on it.Even with all that added it that kind of weight definately is hard on the truck it kinda felt like I had the weight of the world behind me lol.I leave my tuner set on the tow mode because I tow with this truck on a regular basis and have towed several load's in the 6,000 to 7,000 pound range and it did fine with those load's.

trailer balance is key

I have towed my 12,100 lbs boat all summer. towes fine.

but i am now looking to get a super duty as I worry about insurance and long term effects on the tranny......

Your're right rambuctious,I used to drive a drive a truck so I know a thing a or to about loading a trailer lol.I see alot of people pulling small load's with whatever they're towing loaded all the way to the front of the trailer and the truck will be sagging bad even on 3/4 ton's.

I pull a 7800lbs, 31 foot travel trailer. I have the Heavy payload package, which includes the factory 4.10 rearend. I have stock tires, and funky 7 lug steel wheels. The truck pulls this just fine. Just a note, if I have a full tank of gas (op larger tank)and the wife 2 kid and some bikes, I am very close to my 15300lbs GCVW, even thou the trailer isn't at the 9200lbs max. At this kind of weight it goes without saying you must have a brake controller.
