Pictures 351c, 351w

K. iv'e heard of all the differences between the 2 styles of motor's but have never seen the real differences, alot of what people say about these motors is kinda confusing and i would like to see the front of the two motor along with the veiw of the top of the motors so that i can actually see the difference, i have tried to find these pictures on google and having wasted 2 hours searching have failed to find any. So in my request, i have been offered a screamin deal on a 351c. but want to make sure it is a 351c. can anyone please assist me with some pictures, i would highly appreciate it, thanks in advance.

hi the cleveland will have a dry intake. the top radiator hose will go into a waterneck on top of the block, whereas a windsor has the top radiator hose going into the front of the intake manifold{like a 302} the heads on a cleveland will have a 2 or a 4 cast into the top corners of the heads. the heads with the 2 casting will be better for low end power.parts for the cleveland are not as plentiful, but they can be found. i dont have any pics, but its pretty easy to tell the difference. greg

a 351 W will look like this

and a 351 C will look like this
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...sport/351m.jpg

now for the fun part. the picture is of a 351M. the M and C engines look alike, but the M engine uses a bell housing bolt pattern shared with the 351M, 400, 429, and 460.
the C engine, has a bell housing pattern of the 6 bolt 289-302-351W engines.

Okay so Neither one of these engines were in 73-79 trucks.

why is this posted here in this forum ?

Once you see a few 351C then a few 351W, you will never forget the difference. The 351W just looks smaller, but the water neck is the dead giveaway. If it's in the intake manifold, it's a W.

The 351C and 351M/400 problem is solved in the width of the intake manifold. The M block is clearly wider, but that is your only real clue to see the difference by eye.

Also, the heads with the 4 cast in the corners, if you see those, you may as well just give them to me and try to find yourself the "2" cast heads... ;P

And you have a race car of some sorts that you are going to put those heads on?

BTW, you will find the 2 and the 4 on the upper corner of the head, right past the end of the valve cover. The M motors typically do not have anything cast there, however that is not a guarantee, things get changed around alot.
A windsor will have the thermostat located in the intake manifold. A 351 will have it in the block, facing up.

Another thing not mentioned, a 351 looks exactly like a 302. You can tell the difference by the width of the intake manifold, and the 351 has ribs above the top two belhousing bolts. Here is a good pic. The intake gasket is even with the dizzy mountin g bolts on a 302, and is about 1/2" higher on a W. Measure about 10.5" across the intake manifold

Count the valve cover bolts

2 bolts the engine is a: 239/256/272/292/312 (produced from 1954 to 1964 Y-block)
4 bolts = Fuelie 460
5 bolts the engine is a: 332/352/360/361/390/391/406/410/427/428/ (FE engine)
6 bolts the engine is a: 221/260/289/302/351W (Windsor family)
7 bolts the engine is a: 370/429/429/460 (385 sereis)
8 bolts the engine is a: 351C/351M/400 (Cleveland / Modified 335 series)

Beware of the industrial motors(shown in RED. 361, 391, 370 and 429's bear a resemblance to their FE and 385 series counter parts, but are not high revers, and require $$$ to get good power out of them

trinogt 09-16-2007 03:48 PM

The 391 FT was also used as a service replacement for the 428 because it could be bored to 4.13, as it was cast with thicker walls. Sometimes recognized by a reverse "105" cast into the front of the block just below the driver side head. I had one of these in my 1974 F100.

As for "And you have a race car of some sorts that you are going to put those heads on? "

You don't need a 'race car' to put these heads on. My 1971 Torino GT came stock with the 4V quench heads (M code) 11:1 compression, and went like hell. No, I wouldn't have gone down to a 2V on that car. That thing screamed lke a banshee in stock form.

masterbeavis 09-16-2007 06:22 PM

Did you put some 4.56's in it to help it off the line?? And what do you mean it "went"? Sounds to me like either you sold it, blew it up, or had a date with the local telephone pole?

trinogt 09-16-2007 06:29 PM

It could smoke the tire(s) up to 3rd if I kept my foot in it... And ya know what? That was with 2.75 gears... Still stock, so why go with a higher ratio gear if it could do that?

And if you really want to know, my old car is fine, in the hands of a friend who bought it from me, because I got a major back injury at work and had to sell my pride and joy to feed my family; But hey, thanks for asking!

Ok, now I was impressed by that 302 powered '84! I haven't seen too many 5.0 trucks move like that... and to beat a sizeably larger engine with Hemi heads??? Sweet!!!
