428 Heads For 390?

ok i was woundering if any one had any exspereance with my dilema.
ok here goes I have a 1976 ford F-250 hi-boy and am currently building a 390 Fe motor, i punched it out .030 over and have a simple power max cam in it and i need alot of head work done i need all guides put in so i decideding on a set of 428 heads with 2.060 intake and 1.65 exaust valves with soft seats( all valves and seats and guides are new). The head codes are EDC 6090E Does any one know what this acualy is? The guy wants 400.00 for the set is this a good deal? any other coments on how i can squeeze out any more Hp from this motor?

First off those heads are not 428's. They are early FE heads for a 332-352 1958 models. They just have the CJ Valve sizes in them. Don't get me wrong they are probably good heads and will work fine for a nice build up. They head volume is 69.0 - 72.0. They will net a little more compression ratio but under the right circumstances that could be a good thing. One other thing I would look into is getting hardened valve seats put in to those heads.

For the price the guy wants for the heads I would look into pricing on fixing your old ones. Just Some Ideas.

John, Several of the (AE)heads were made to run on most of the engines 352-428 w/o air. What number is on yours at the two center sparkplug holes? I would agree with the previous, have yours reworked. :-X06

CrazyJ, the EDC heads were used on 58-60 352 engines. Lots of guys who race 428s like this casting because of the big intake ports it has. The intake ports are very nearly indenticle to 428CJ intakes. If the valves have been upgraded to 2.09 and 1.65 sizes, it should do almost as well as a 428CJ head. The EDC head also has the higher exit exhaust ports ( 1/4 inch ) that the CJ head has, and 'D' shaped combustion chambers. If the heads had hard seats under the exhausts, and you were sure the valves and guides were new, it would be a pretty good deal. But if you have to install hard exhaust seats ( and for unleaded, you need them ) reworking your heads starts to look like a better deal. If you have C8AE-H or D2TE-AA heads, you have the smaller intake ports. The differance is at the bottom of the port. The roofs are the same as the CJ and EDC head. By filling in the port floors, ford got the same flow at a higher velocity with the smaller port. The higher velocity through the ports than helps cylinder filling at 2K to 5K engine speeds. This would be very nice on a heavy truck. The later haeds also have, IMO, a nicer short side radius in both intake and exhaust ports. The C8AE-H and the D2's both have the 1/4 dropped exhaust ports however. This really does not cause you any trouble as long as you run headers that are made correctly. The factory manifolds seem to fit early or late heads without any problems, if we can't talk you into headers. Now lets look at the money $$$. I don't know what machine work prices are in your area, so I will quote you prices from a job that the place I am working for just did-complete VJ (inculdes bronze guides) 225$, add hard exhaust seats-100$, new stainless valves (2.09/1.65) 150$, felpro gasket set-50$, total out the door-525$. If you bought the EDC heads-400$, and did half a valve job- 112.50, added hard ex seats-100$ and bought gaskets-50$, total-662.50$. I think you should rework what you have. Especially considering you don't need the high RPM power that those big intake ports are best for. Let a racer buy them. DF

Why don't you just buy a set of new aluminum heads. They are pretty cheap for our FE motors. Little bit more expensive than reworking but it'll be brand new and you shouldn't have to worry about it again.

Just mt 2 cents

The last i checked Keith Craft had the cheapest prices on the Ebock heads. They were about $50 or $75 cheaper apeice than most other places I found. But it has been a while since I have looked. They have web site but they don't list prices on the site. I saw their ad in a Muscle Mustang and oth Fast Fords mag. I hope this helps if someone is looking for some Aluminum heads.
