351w vs 360 fe
Have a 69 f100 2wd with a 360 fe. Truck is going to be a daily driver, no heavy towing. Looking to either build up the 360 a little, maybe swap in 390 crank rods, 4v intake and carb, mild cam, headers and elec ignition.
Or swap in a 351w, same mild build, stock heads. Not looking for huge power numbers, just want something that will get out of its own way, be a good driver and not kill me on gas. Looking at the windsor because it's close in cubes, lighter and can bolt a 5spd up pretty easy. Any suggestions, ideas? Thank, Matt. |
You will find a wider variety of aftermarket parts and accessories with a 351w.

I'd say find you a 390. You already have the tranny (An FE bellhousing won't bolt up to a smallblock). You'll be able to spend the money on the motor, and not have to worry about messing with a different tranny, probably having to change driveshafts, different mounts, ect. You can keep the tranny, and still make a good bit of power. Rebuild a 390 and get the power package from Edelbrock, that should really get that truck moving.

Thanks for the replies. I deffinetly want to swap trannys, looking for a 5spd, not the granny 4spd I have now.

then go with the 351W other wise do a 390 like mtthwvn73 said.

The 351W will take a different set of engine mount towers and you will have trouble finding an exhaust that works in that model truck.

No problem with exhaust when using manifolds. Any exhaust shop can make a system from the manifolds back. They did on my 63 F100 with a 351W. You will need 302 motor mount towers. Pretty common on those trucks.

I have a set of stock manifolds and the outlet is about 2 inches away and pointing straight at the firewall when I tried them on my 69..
