I am new to this site so dont mind me if I screw up. But I would like to know how what would be the cheapest and easiest way to get 400hp out of a 351w and about roughly how much would it cost (in Canadian $$ please)?:-fire

Would it be possible to get 350+ hp out of a 351w without doing any head work, boring it out or using a stroker kit? and if so what would a guy do to get it there?

From what i've heard superchargers and turbochargers are pretty expensive. Would doing headwork be cheaper and would it still give me a good hp gain? :-fire

i am making over 400 hp with my super charged setup. and i have not touched my heads, or cam. blowers are the quickest cheapest way to pick 100hp easy. most kits can be had for under 3000$ it would take some serious heads and probably an unstreetable cam to get 400hp out of a 351 naturally aspirated. is your setup fuel injected, carbuerated? elaborate more and well be here to help.

I'm just starting to learn about high perf engines for when i do get my dream "blue oval" machine. I guess I'm still kinda out to lunch on most this stuff. Sorry if I wasted any of your time by helping me but thanks for the info anyway.:-D And since you seem to know whatyou're talking about, how many horses do you get per pound of boost and can you run regular pump gas with a supercharger?:-fire

they say you get 10 hp per # boost. and if it intercooled then you get more.

400hp out of a 351w is not a problem, but it won't exactly be your typical truck engine. It will require a decent set of gears, and stall convertor with an automatic.

Here's the recipe...

750cfm carb
Weiand stealth intake
Cam in the 224*duration, .525" lift area
Well ported D00E type heads with 1.90/1.60valves
or stock TFS Twisted Wedge heads
9.5:1 compression, or 10:1 with aluminum heads
1 5/8" primary headers into 2.5" exhaust.

I am in the middle of building one right now. It is bored .030 over, heads are ported and polished but have the stock valves. 11:1 Compression. Crane Cams, offroad 4x4 cam, Small tube headers, cherry bomb mufflers, 900cfm TBFI system. According to desktop dyno (which is pretty accurate), the engine will make 400hp and 425 lb ft. torque. If i were to have the heads machined for large valves (or buy aftermarket heads) the same setup will easily make 455Hp, 450 lb ft torque @6000rpm. This is all naturally aspirated, i can't afford a blower right now, but i will install forged rods and a main girdle so it can handle more power later. I am also considering a 50HP NOS system just for show :) With the 4:56 gears in the rearend i am hoping to pick the front wheels up off the ground when i take off (either that or snap the u-joints).

My dad got a 351w with 350horse built by the local shop in lethbridge alberta for 3000$(bored out and a a lot of head work). P.S. that power is down low. for another thousand he could of got up over 400hp.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Mar-02 AT 02:17 AM (EST)]Ford Racing has a 392 stroker motor that puts out 461 hp and 454 lbs-ft of torque. Just for the fun of it, replace the GT-40X heads with a set of AFR heads milled to a 54cc chamber, Victor Jr. intake, and Speed Demon Carb. Try 537 hp at 5900 rpm's and 505 lbs.-ft of torque at 4900 rpm's. Box stock heads except for the mill job. That's a 351 block bored .030" over. Custom crank with 3.850-inch stroke, along with stock-length 351-W rods, using .030 over 302 pistons. Actually it meaures 393 cubic inches. I think that proves the carb is not yet dead. Pretty good for having no power adder and a 750 cfm carb. Oh yeah. The cam is a Comp Cams XE282HR. That's the most important ingredient.

If you don't mind having to rev the snot out
of your engine, 400 HP is relatively easy for
the 351W, just remember, you won't be able to
tow anything, high zoot motors don't like too
much of a load on them, unless they're built
for that load (read that as "you need to talk
to a competant cam manufacturer...). I really
don't care about HP at 5000 + rpm, I want torque
where I can use it...Like 1800 rpm, to get
the trailer I'm hauling moving...
