What kind of weight are you towing
Just curious what amount of weight you guys are towing with your new expeditions and how they are handling it. How do these things handle 7000+ pounds or would the F150 be a better overall tow vehicle. Thanks.

I am towing a 5000 lb 22 ft boat. Boats don't buck a lot of wind likw a caming trailer but they are still heavy!
I pulled the same boat with my 04 Exped and it pulled fine, but this 07 Exped pulls like a dream! The extra engine horsepower and the 6 speed tranny are a huge differance from the 04. I really cannot feel that the boat is behind me except the hills or mountains. This 07 stays in the sweet spot very well, pulling up the Colorado Rockies I was going close to 60 at the top of the long grade going into the tunnel, I cannot ask for anything better than that, unless of course I wanted to drive the F-350! |
Horspower difference between 04 & 07? I thought they were both 300hp 5.4 3v? Or did the 3v come out in 05?

2004 Expedition
Engine Category Details
5.4L V8 260 hp gas Standard Number of cylinders: 8 Number of valves: 16 Camshaft: Single overhead cam (SOHC) Horsepower: 260 hp @ 4500 rpm Torque: 350 ft-lbs @ 2500 rpm |
Yes, the 04 was the last of the 260 hp in 2005 the newer 3v.
With the newer power and 6 speed it is a big differace even non-towing you can tell! |
Towing with a 3.73 or 3.31 rear?
|
The 3.73 rear comes with the tow package, make sure you have the tow package on the truck, before you try to tow much over 4,000lb.

I am also curious about towing a heavy load with the Expedition but I am looking at 9K and a heavier tongue weight for a 31 TT. I pulled it home empty (book says 7.5K) with my 06 Explorer Ltd with 4.6/tow pkg that routinely pulls my 8K (weighed on scale) boat in the summer with no problems or sag but I had a lot of rear suspension sag because of the heavy tongue. I bought a 00 Excursion V-10 but after making a few gas stations rich I am wondering could I trade both and get the Expedition. I could be wrong but the Excursion doesn't seem that much stronger than the 05 Expedition's I test drove a while back. I bought a 0-1000 tongue weight scale and it goes off the scale so I figure about 1100-1200 tongue weight which I think will be the limiting factor. I was wondering if it will do it without damage and although I use a weight distribution hitch is the rear air suspension mandatory.

Yes that is the one that I have (the 0-1000) used once still in the plastic it was shipped in. A swap sounds good PM me a way to get in contact with you. With todays gas prices it will probably be just a little bit cheaper to ship them rather than drive :) !

My tongue weigh. You can swap out the gages. Here we are without fresh water. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-...M-IMG_0958.JPG -- Chuck |
Oops forgot to answer I'm in Chicago. When you say swap gauges where can I get them from, does it matter the brand? And when you top off the oil how precise does the topping have to be. Won't the gauge be off if there is a little air in the resevoir?

Hey Chuck S how much do your trailer weigh and how does the Expedition handle the load?
|
We weigh about 5000 pounds. The Expedition handles the load well and cruises at 65mph at 1800 rpm in 6th gear with the trailer behind on most roads.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-...9-IMG_0709.JPG There's a pair of Trojan T125 6v batteries and two LP tanks on the tongue. Equal-i-zer WDH (1000/10,000 pound). -- Chuck |
Chuck, do you happen to have the Ashcroft gauge model #'s? At my work we buy Ascroft products so I should be able to get one at a good price.
