PH8 vs. PH8A oil filter

I have some new old stock Fram PH8 oil filters and would like to know the difference between them and the PH8A filters. I changed the oil on my 351W today and installed a PH8, assuming there is no big difference.

Anyone know the difference?

They are the same dimensionally. Curiously, though, the one I removed which is about a year old had some rubbery stringy material crossing through the center hole near the threads. As if a rubber seal were coming apart in the filter.
I have read a couple articles on the Internet comparing oil filters and most rated Fram quite low. I was hoping that someone would tell me that the PH8s, being old, were better made and good to use.

Thanks for that link, Pete. I had read that one a couple years ago and it seems to be a well researched oil filter study. I cut open the PH8A filter (Canadian made) that came off the engine today, and it was similar to the one in the article but had 40 pleats instead of 34.
The author of the study said, "Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there."
Which implies that my old PH8s are better than the new ones.
