Custom Stereo Installation

I have a fairly new Cobra 29, (I think thats the model....it's in the workshop right now). And I have a kenwood, (standard DIN height), installed in the dash with the standard install kit giving you a pocket below the head unit. What I was looking for, and I didn't really look too hard, but is some sort of kit that would allow me to install the stereo about 1/4 inch higher, pretty much getting rid of the kit's plastic trim above it and it would make enough room for the cb below it. The cb's speaker is on the face so I don't have to worry about an external speaker along with the mic jack. Or...The other option I was thinking of, is instructions or a kit to install it into the pocket above the driver's right knee in the lower dash. I would like to install this flush mount with the dash instead of under the dash...mainly for the clean looks. Has anyone on here done this or know where I can get the information for doing this? I am hoping for a dash kit to install it in the double din space with the head unit so I can save what is in there now in case I ever want to switch it back and not have to modify the dash panel.

Thanks all!

I have seen it done in a dodge and it looks ugly. That was a much bigger radio though. The smaller radios maynot look as bad.

All of the kits I have seen but a perimeter around the radio. So I would look at either modifing the kit you have or putting in the pocket. For the pocket install, remove that lower portion of the dash, cut the bottom of the pocket open enough to stick the bracket in it and bolt the bracket down. You shouldn't see much of the cuts, and if you do, foam or electrical tape will cover it up.

LOL I'm still waiting for the part to come in. I will be sure to post pics when I get the install done. But nothing too quick....I also have horses to work with. I don't always get the time I want to play with the truck.

ok cool!!!!!!!

OK It is done. :-headbang Took about 4 hours since I had to trim the top and bottom flange in the dash for the units to fit. But once I did that...fit like a glove. Had to also trim a little on the face piece around the units since the CB was a little wider than the stereo. Anyway...here it is done and complete. (And yes, that's my I=Pod in the pocket. :-headbang That plays through the stereo too with an adapter from Crutchfield.com...No FM Modulation)

I could of had it out just a little further, but decided to plant it all the way in. Otherwise it would of been flush with the dash face.

Thanks for posting the pics; awesome job on the install!

I eventually want to mount a DIN-sized Motorola Spectra VHF radio below a new stereo, but to date have not removed the stock stereo (cassette!!) so I didn't know if I had enough depth. I believe the Spectra has a depth similar to your Cobra so I think I'm good. :)
