460 needs fixin'
 

I have a 79 F250 4x4 SC 460 with an oil pan leak (has L&L's 10-quart pan). Tried taking it off myself, but just won't clear the axle/front crossmember. Can anyone recommend a shop preferrably on the north side of Denver that knows the best way to fix this, i.e. someone who knows older Fords and has actually heard of this problem. Thanks! Galen

Hopefully someone will chime in. I do my own work, can't afford shop rate. I wouldn't be surprised if a shop charges enough to buy the engine hoist you'd want to get clearance. LOL

It's not necessary to pull the engine, but you have to disconnect and loosen enough stuff to get the room you need. It just takes some time and patience, check everything as you go.

I just took it to a local mechanic who said he had done this once before. He did end up having to pull the engine, probably because it had the L&L 10-quart oil pan on it. I found a couple shops from additional research on this site which I may go to in the future, but looks like we got this done this time. Galen

That's Funny! Or maybe not, but I have the same setup with a rear sump HV oil pump and I have never had to pull the motor to get the pan off. Maybe the L&L motor mounts give me a little more lift than stock ones do. I hope you are not running with stock mounts. If I'm not mistaken you have the clearance problem at the front of the pan? If you have a bottle jack and something to put it on you can jack up the front of the engine to get the clearance you're looking for. But if you have a front sump oil pump you may have another problem altogether.
