1996 Ford Ranger Odometer Does Not Work

Here is my problem. I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT. Everything was working fine and I noticed the odometer and the trip odometer no longer function. Speedometer is fine. After doing some research on here, it appears that the instrument cluster should be replaced. Where is a reputable place to buy an instrument cluster? (The dealer more than likely charges an arm and a leg). Also, how easy is this to replace? Another issue...we have inspection in NC...and I currently have 195,000 miles on my truck. What if I replace my instrument cluster and I suddenly have 3000 miles for the next inspection?? I can't help it if the odometer/trip odometer crapped out on me? What to do in that case? I don't plan on selling this truck. I am going to drive it until it no longer runs.
