Here is my hillbilly mixer

1 Attachment(s)
1 barrel, 1 heating element from water heater, 1 thermostat from a old stove, 1 old outboard drive and finally a electric motor. I just need to wire up the thermostat to the element and rig my pumps to move liquid in and out of the barrel.

Ummmm, wouldn't a small electric trolling motor do just as well? You can pick them up at a yard sale for $10-$40 apiece.....

kennedyford 02-25-2007 11:47 PM

Yup, but I dont want to give money away. Besides, in Arizona boats go in the water 365 days a year 8 days a week. Trolling motors ive never seen at yard sales and I love yard sales.

Looks like you might need a little bigger prop!! lol
Other then that looks like a great set up!

At work we use a pneumatic mixer in our oil drums with an impeller maybe 1/3 the size of the prop you've got there. You are going to have to do a lot of experimenting with the rpms to keep that thing from just tossing the oil over the top of the drum.

If you want you could plumb the water pump impeller in the lower unit as a transfer pump to move material to a settling tank while being mixed and warm. What do you think. I just love your setup! I think I've got an old lower unit layin' out back. Better yet- If I could convince an outboard motor to run on diesel I could just drop a fuel line in the tank and fire it up! LOL

Ha ha ha, Im not gonna plumb an impeller from this junk lower. Be too much brain work. I have a fitting in the bottom of the barrel that will go to my second pump. My primary pump is a 2 horse spa pump that moves oil from my 400 gallon tote tank to the barrel. A second moves it from the barrel bottom to my other 400 gallon settle tank. A smaller 3rd pump will move my chemicals mixture to the barrel. Ive just got the last two ideas from Fabman to fab up. A mixer for the chemicals and to find a holding tank that will hold vacuum. I have the vacuum pump already and the total cost is just in my Pvc plumbing.
