What year explorers came with the gt40 heads, and do they have those emissions tubes on the back of them like my 88 302. Im gonna cruz the junk yard this weekend to see if I can come across anything, just need to know what year to look for??

Thanks all

I didn't think any Explorers came with those heads. Weren't all the Explorer's V6s until 1998 or so?

I believe that all the explorer V8's have the GT-40 intakes and heads. The intake are different from the original GT-40 serires, but I think the heads are the same.

Exploers started coming with 5.0 V8's around 1995 or so. I am not sure of the exact year.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Sep-02 AT 04:24 PM (EST)]Actually, Aaron is right! But 1996 was the first year they started using the 5.0, up through 2001. I just looked it up.

Yeh all explorer V8's had gt-40 heads they are the GT-40p head that is available from FRPP. This is once again an old Mustang trick, To replace the E7 heads with the gt40's. On a stock 89 stang they will give you around 30-40hp, more with 1.7 roller rockers and oh so smooth and quiet. I have done this conversion on about 3 stangs and would love to do it on the Bronco. One last thing, How about Headers the GT-40p Heads have a unique exhaust port design and will require a custom header on a Bronco. I do not think that the header ford makes for this conversion on a mustang will fit in the truck. If anyone has any other info, by all means let me have it!

those 5.0 motors in the explorers were they roller cam motors. I ask because my 88 bronco is not. if i used those gt40 heads would I have to convert over to a roller setup??

The exhaust header is quite easy. The GT-40P heads have the same exhaust ports as a standard GT-40 head, so any header that fits a 93-95 Lightning will work, or factory Lightning headers for that matter!

Thats not 100% true. The GT40p heads have a different spark plug location. While you can use a stard small block header you will have intferance problems to work out. Personaly I wouldn't waste my time with GT40p heads. Either go for the real GT40 head from SVO (whats on my 302) or a Windsor Jr. head. The last time I checked you could get the jrs for about $100 more than the GT40p heads. If your on a budget just port your E7s. A friend of mine ported a set at home and got numbers pretty close to the Windsor Jr heads just a little of at the higher lifts. Probably due to the valve size differance.

I have done this conversion. I rebuilt my 93 Bronco 5.0L engine last month. I had a friend who was also rebuilding his 5.0L in his Mustang. Before the rebuild, I had installed a complete Bassani exhaust. I took the headers over to his house while he still had the engine out of his Mustang, and placed my Bronco Bassani headers onto his short block with the GT-40P heads.

In order to get the gt40P heads to work on my Bronco, I took plug wire #4 (Ford Motorsport), cut the end off, replaced with MSD 90 degree plug, to gain proper clearance to the header.

Also, to get proper clearance for plug #7, I had to ding, or dent one of the exhaust primaries to get proper clearance. Other than that, I had plenty of clearance.

The only real problem you'll run into doing this (if you use the Bassani headers)is you will have to install the plugs first, before you put the headers on, as you will not be able to get a spark plug socket in there to tighten them with the headers on, unless you grind of some the header flange.

In the end, was it worth the hassle, probabally not. Between the $1000 exhaust, rebuilt, and the extra $480 I spent for the P heads, I did'nt notice any addional power. Of course, my trans is garbage too and won't lock up right.

Believe it or not GT-40P 1998-2000 Explorer heads outflow the GT-40 heads used on the 1996-1997 Explorer.

I have the gt40p's on my 85 351w. The only mod was to drill the bolts holes to 1/2 in v.s. the 7/16 the 302's use. the longtube hedmans work just fine. skip the junk yard you can pick up a set from svo for around 5 brand new and assimbled. 20 bucks for the machine shop to drill.
