Help needed telling year of 5.4 engine

I purchase this 5.4 L engine at an auction and need to know where to look for markings to determine what year this long block is. I just picked it up this afternoon and noticed a white sticker on front cover on the driver bank which has 12-11-00 17:27 and 656 below this apparent date and time. I assume that there is some stamp markings on the heads under the valve covers but I haven't taken them off yet... very cold outside at this time.

Appreciate any help in determining what year as well as possible year interchangability.

Thanks, hugger94.

I believe that tag says December 11th, 2000

That'd put it in the 2001 model-year.

Yep so that makes it a PI engine, it is a direct bolt in for '99-'03 and practically direct bolt in for '97 and '98. I am sure something would be a tad different on the top end, maybe the returnless fuel system, from the '97 '98 NPI's.

Yes I would agree with both of you... I just checked what I thought was a Ford VIN number from a barcoded sticker on the driver valve cover, 1FTNX20LX1EB73746 and verified that it was indeed a valid VIN, for a 2001 F-250 Super Duty built at Jefferson County, KY.

I also verified the PI on the left bank head rear.

So if I have a 97 F150 5.4L could I use my intake off my current engine to use with 2001 5.4L since there is a possible difference in the returnless fuel return?

It would be far easier to address putting the whole PI 5.4L in the '97 than putting an NPI intake on PI heads. The returnless thing is stuck in my head I'd swear they changed it in '99 but can't remember for sure, if anything you'd just need the '97 Fuel rail.

Sorry, that was what I was trying to say. I was thinking about replacing my 97 5.4 NPI engine with this 2001 PI engine and even though I said I would use my intake off the 97 NPI, I really meant using only the NPI fuel rail. Hope I make sense.

That should work.
