18,000 lb plates?
 

Hi all,

I'm from Missouri and was trying to find out what all comes with buying 18,000 lb tags for my Excursion. I know obviously that the combined weight of my truck and camper is high enough that I can't get by with 12,000 lb tags. My question is are you not required to wear seat belts? one license plate for the front of the vehicle, requirement for road flares, fire extiguisher, etc. I would like some direction and or a web site that would spell all of the details out. Could anyone help me out?

I just got an 18k plate after i purchased a 24' enclosed car hauler
and would like to know also.I'm from MO too.

Well, here in Minnesota, the trailer is plated seperately from the truck, so when I got the 18K tags here I didn't need them and downgraded to 12K which will cover me for 2 tons of passengers/payload. So you might want to research it a little further.

I agree dmv for your location is the best idea. I don't know if you're looking for DOT regs? If you're Joe Homeowner, you don't fall under them. But if you're a business, even a sole proprietorship, then you do. DOT has their own website.
A couple of years ago some of their rules changed such that they wanted states to tag the tow vehicle with the combined weight. I dont know if that was a mandatory thing or if they just wanted it. Nebraska complied and so now the trailer tags are cheap but the truck tags (I'm at 11 tons) went up. I think we complied because our rates were higher for vehicles than trailers. So they get more money.

The biggest part is going to be if your doing it to haul your personal stuff or getting paid. DOT will look at the number of axels and how big the tires are 6 lug or 8 lug will draw atten. Anything over 10001 lbs for hire come under DOT regs and the next is 26k I believe with more regs. Like they stated before check with you local DOT . Here in Indiana you have to display your DOT number on the truck .Don't ask me how I found out . It was not cheap. Get the number and follow the regs. If you do any kind of towing you will need them.

I have been told the 18,000 tags allow you to not wear your seatbelt in Mo, but I wouldn't advise it in other states. One of those laws that doesn't really make much sense, and yes, you only have to run one plate, again that applies to Mo, can't say if neighboring states honor it the same. Should be able to wander the MoDOT site and find what you need...

How much does vehicle registration (license plates) cost in Missouri?
Passenger registration fees are based on the taxable horsepower (which is different from actual engine horsepower) of your vehicle.

Truck license plates are based on the gross weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load to be carried or pulled at any one time and distance. Local license plates are issued to trucks that will not be driven beyond a 50-mile radius of the owner's registered address. Beyond local license plates are issued in all other cases. I saw they only had 18,000 under commercial, but I know for a fact it doesn't have to be commercial, most of the in-laws have 18,000 plates, and not all of them pull a trailer... only 2 of the trucks get hooked up... One was an Expedition!
