Out of State License Plate
 

Hi,

I just moved to Tucson from SLC Utah. My Bronco tags expire this month and I plan to do the License plate thing next week. I also have a F-350 with Utah plates but the tags are good until October of 2007. I am hoping I can run the Utah plates until then and I am wondering if the Arizona DMV will catch on when I go and register the F-350 next year. Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

I did about the same thing when I moved to Phx. I had my motorcycle registered once I moved down in March since it's plate had expired during the winter but my plate on the truck was still good till Sept so I just kept using it. DMV didn't ask me any questions about why I was just getting it registered when I went to do it. I classified my bike as my primary transportation but I know from living here prior that DMV had a 800 number for neighbors to call in if someone hadn't switched over their vehicles. If they caught you it was a pretty good fine.

The problem you may run into is the insurance since it's generally suppose to be licensed in the state it's insured in. A few months after I switched the insurance down here I got a notice from Utah stating that the agent there notified them that it was no longer insured by him and unless I sent proof of insurance in UT the registration would be revoked next month. I didn't worry about it since it was insured down here and it was already set to expire next month anyways.

I was only looking to go 5 months with mine and you'd probably be fine for a few months anyways, but seeing that you still want to go a full year might just be a question on how lucky you are. I can't remember if Utah give you back the unused credit in your plate but if they do you'd be better off to go that route.

Goodie is right. I just moved to Birmingham, AL from Beaumont, TX and have gone through similar issues. It's going to be your insurance that ends up requiring you to change over rather quickly, because they can certainly deny coverage on a vehicle that you've told them to be registered in your state that has actually never been registered. It's taken me a couple of months of snail mail, faxes, phone calls, and leaving work early to get my situation straightened out (lost title, forgot to include check for fees to DMV, etc.).

bite the bullet. You'll keep yourself a whole lot less complicated and won't have to worry about getting caught.

Thanks for the input. I am still insured by the same company and insurance agent I was in Utah. I informed them about my move and they just changed my mailing address on the policy. I think its when you cancel the insurance that they send the info to the Utah DMV. I will check and see if they will give me credit on the Utah tags. I heared it is real expensive here in Arizona compared to Utah. In Utah it cost me about $380 for the tags.

For my truck it was pretty much the same as Ut vs AZ. The registration was a bit cheaper in UT but because they require safety inspection there that is not required here it balanced out to the same.

I just bought my 90 F-150 XLT 4X4 out of vegas. 24 bucks to transfer the title and register it. :-X0A6

Registration fees are based upon an assigned value of the truck.

It varies depending on the vehicle. There is a $4.00 title fee; an $8.00 registration fee; plus an air quality research fee of $1.50; and a vehicle license tax (VLT) assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states. There may also be a weight fee for commercial vehicles and other fees. The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona (15% before 8/1/98). Then, as of the Dec 1, 2000 reduction, the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value. For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06.

And being a F350 that will classify you as commercial. I can't remember but it was $8 or something like for the commercial fee on top of everything else for mine.

New residents that move to CA have only 30 days to register the vehicle. Woe betide the guy who tells the CA DMV..."I've been here for 6 months or so."

Late fees...not pleasant!
