glowing red
So a buudy of mine has a 2001 ranger with the I-4 and a 5 speed manual and went we are out drivign threw some trails by my dads work or justu plain driving around the exhaust manifold glows red. what would cause this?

They get hot under hard working conditions, but for them to glow is usually indictive of a clogged cat converter.

Iv'e always thought that at night pretty much all manifolds glow. I know the header on a 4-stroke dirtbike will glow at night.
|
okay, i will let him know...it glows any time we drive it day or night...just at night you can see with the hood closed. it hasn't been doing it as much right now since this week we havn't gotten above 36 degrees and we have been driving threw puddles of water at are just above freezing and the water gets on the manifold and is cooling it down..

Umm...no they shouldn't glow at all times. The dirtbike should do it because it's typically run at high power.
But a truck engine, with the exception of a diesel or HEAVILY driven gas engine (such as a towing application), should not glow under normal conditions. Just be easy with that freezing water on the glowing manifolds. Think hot glass into freezing water and you'll see why I say that. |
oh okay...i got ya.
