Oil pressure sending unit
 

Howdy

My gauge shows no oil pressure at all,

Can anyone tell me where the oil pressure sending unit is located so that I can change it?

All the way to the rear of the engine, slightly to the passenger side of center.
Sticks straight up with a wire plugged to the very top.

This is the rear of the engine, you can see a brass nipple sticking up from below the turbo outlet. That is the location of the stock oil pressure sending unit.

Does the oil pressure switch put out a ground with oil pressure and an open with no oil pressure? Has anyone ever measured it?

No, I've never measured it but have replaced one my 86, easy to re & re....one of the things you'll read, is that the stock gauges for the IDI's are not very reliable at all and you want any real readings, you should go with after market gauges.

If you ground the wire to the Oil Pressure switch it will make the gauge read max oil Pressure with the wire off it will read no oil pressure!

No wonder I did not find it, the turbo probably hid it

I have an aftermarket ATS turbo in my 87 6.9 and I had problems getting at the stock sender. I put a T into the oil supply line to the turbo. Its very accessible. I put in another T for a Napa sending unit. The stock wire just reaches to it. Instead of close nipples I used air compressor fittings. They are short but have a hex center so you can tighten them.

The oil pressure gauge works by resistance.

When I was using the stock gauge I found unplugging the electrical connection and the reinstalling it could and would change the pressure reading.

That is why I went with a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Sorry I did not have the oil pressure location circled, but that is the only picture I have uploaded that you can see the back of the engine.

The funny thing is that it is located right on top of the turbo in plain sight.
Thanks to Daves picture I was able to track it down and the tube went to the top
of the turbo and there it was... right in plain sight

I was looking all around the block near the oil cooler and filter, thats why I did not find it

I have found a picture is worth two pages of typing.

I just took pictures of everything I had a hard time telling someone how to find before I had my engine out.

I have found I should have taken time to take a few more pictures though.

But since the top of the engine is missing, it does not really tell you where to look or the fact you can't really see it that well either.

LMAO.....I love it.

I got a little more fuel to it now, running about 24 PSI boost, and still a little black smoke. Passes everything but a fuel pump. The blended winter fuel dropped my MPG by 3 miles to the gallon. Boy these 15 degree mornings sure do make it fun to drive though, that cold air sure does agree with the engine.

Oh, by all means, keep us posted on how it runs with the new changes. That sucks that it dropped that hard on mileage.
