Speed Sensor
 

Anyone have any knowledge of the speed sensor on the transmission of an E4OD transmission. My truck is a 1992 f-150 4X4. The trans is not shifting through gears correctly. Its like its lazy shifting and when it finally shifts its as if there is a shift kit in it causing it to shift hard. I just put on a new TPS and it got worse after I did this. My friend is a transmission mechanic for Ford and he said to replace the Speed Sensor on the Trans. Any suggestions or experiences with this?

The Speed sensor is on the rear end, top center of the banjoe, it is not on the Transmission.

The sensor in 1992 was call a Differential Speed Sensor (DSS) and was also called a Rear Anti-lock Brake (RABS) sensor.

Yes it will cause the problem you described but the PSOM will cause it also.

Subford, im not sure i know what you mean by the banjo, and what exactly is the PSOM and where is this located. Thanks Ryan

The banjo is the large round thing in the middle of the rear end where the Differential gears go, the DSS (VSS, RABS) sensor is in the top of it.

The PSOM is mounted inside the Instrument Cluster.

okay ill check there and see. so there is no speed sensor on the trans of this specific e40d trans.

No speed sensor on this specific e40d trans.

hey subfod, I found the DSS on the rear end at lunch and made a trip to the local ford dealer and talked to the parts manager. he showed a speed sensor on the trans and a DSS on the rear end. They are both suppose to be on my truck and they both pretty much do the same thing. I guess I will try and locate the speed sensor on the tranny and replace them both cuz Im not sure which one is bad. The one I looked at at the ford place had an electric plug in and a spot where the spedo cable went in.

92-up do not use a speed sensor on the transmission nor a cable driven speedometer. Don't bother buying one of those :) .

I wonder what trans the guy at ford was referencing. Mine is an E-40d and like I said I havent had a chance to look at the trans real good yet.

It sounds like the parts manager does not know what he is talking about. You only have the one like EPNCSU2006 said.

it is more of a catalog issue, they list a speed sensor but it does not list w/ or w/o E4OD trans, matter of fact it doesn't list any thing other then with electronic odomter.

so if you come in asking for a VSS on trans I would sell you that one too.

The customer is always right. dont want argue with the cust.

Yes, but if customer comes in looking for VSS on a 92 truck (no location mentioned) and the parts man gives them a VSS that is supposed to fit in the transmission, the customer is dissatisfied with the service. The customer has no control over the accuracy of the parts man's catalogs...

If the customer asked specifically for the transmission speed sensor, sell one to him.

I was trying come up with something a novice would understand and it was between "banjo" and "pumpkin" and I thought "banjo" would be better.
