hilton head suggestions- local haunts

OK fte brothers and sisters, heading to Hilton Head SC in April and would appreciate any guidance you can offer for decent affordable places to eat.
Off the beaten path places, off island places, will even travel within 50 or so miles for a good meal and to take in the local flavor.
Any kind of food will do and kid friendly and adult only (read romantic) suggestions are what I need.
Thanks in advance and if any of you are travelling to the New England/Boston or north of area I would be glad to offer some suggestions to you.
Thanks again.

Hello is there anybody in here?

davidsca 09-28-2006 06:23 PM

Hey V X,
wish I could help, but Charleston is the closest I've ever been to Hilton Head, and its about 100 miles north. I can recommend pretty much anywhere in Charleston. Just go and have a good time

I am in Beaufort, been to Hilton Head a few times. I dont like driving that way do to the hellish traffic. Savannah,ga is a great place to go thats outside of HH. Beaufort even has alot of great opitions. Let me know what exactly you are looking for and I can help. Savannah is a second home to me.

Thanks for chiming in Davidsca and sifon187,
Been to Charleston and loved it, Bowens Island for oysters, Cosmic Dog, and a couple of BBQ places that I can't recall the names of and a fish place at Shem Creek.
Savannah is certainly an option as is Beaufort. Just looking for places the locals go to away from the so called tourist areas. I find that off the beaten path is way more fun than following the crowd. Any kind of food will do but this northern boy needs a good fix of BBQ and ribs and brisket with all the fixins', local seafood, I'm game for anything.
Thanks again

OK I know I'm not going until April but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not sure where it is in Hilton Head but the Conch Cafe is a great place to eat....its not near as expensive as most HH resturants and it is great for some local seafood. Haven't been down to Hilton Head in a while, hope you enjoy yourself...it will sure cost enough.

Alas, Bowens is no longer. Had a little fire a couple weeks ago. Hopefully they will rebuild!

V X 11-01-2006 09:36 PM

I've read about Conch Cafe, probably give it a go.
I guess I'll have to go back to Bowens if they rebuild to write on the wall again.
Never be able to recreate that ambiance though.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming.

So are there any other suggestions?
Also, not to hi-jack my own thread, does South Carolina have a state income tax and/or a state sales tax? Are property values still going up up up?
Thanks

toddlarry 11-09-2006 07:52 AM

There is a state income tax as well as sales tax. I believe the sales tax is 5.5% and generally a local on top of that (Charleston County is 6.5%.)

Real Estate is continuing to rise, though not like it was a year ago. There is a ton of affordable housing in the Charleston area and things are turning to a "buyers market."

Thanks toddlarry.
Keep the Hilton Head and surrounding area dining ideas coming. BBQ BBQ BBQ hint hint!

Come north a little bit to Beaufort and try Big Joe's or Duke's for BBQ.

thefarelaneman 11-19-2006 12:36 AM

Hilton head has alot of less than great places to eat. Most places there are inside the resorts not open to the public. One of the best places open to the public is a crab house located on the north east section of the island on the waterway, Everyone knows its name just ask.....

V X 11-19-2006 12:33 PM

Thanks guys

V X 11-28-2006 06:59 PM

Come on kids, Conch Cafe, a no name crab house and two BBQ places in Beaufort? There has to be more? Give up the goods. It's VACATION TIME and I don't want to cook. Neither does my wife. Or maybe there is a good website to let visitors in on some good spots?

Thanks

HHI has lots of good eateries, be sure to pick up a restaurant guide when you get there. One of our favs is Signe's Heaven Bound Bakery. Besides all the sweet stuff, they have several different types of salads. (Breakfast and lunch, Monday thru Saturday) Crazy Crab has good seafood, as well as The Old Oyster Factory. The wife and I will be going to HHI late this month, so I'll pick up a restaurant guide for you. Just need a snail-mail address. A day trip to Savannah should be a must for you. Downtown is Paula Deen's Lady and Sons restaurant, and her brother has a seafood place on the road headed out to the beach called Uncle Bubba's.

Thanks Capt. Savannah is on the visit list as is Beaufort. I'm sure we will get in the car and just get lost for a day or two too. My cousin went to HHI on the way home to FL and is sending some info to me but thanks for the offer. Hope you have good weather and a safe trip.

V X,

I picked up a copy of the HHI dining guide and will be glad to snail-mail it to you. However, you want to try the magazine's website www.hhidining.com and let me know how it works for you first.

V X 02-27-2007 06:55 PM

Thanks Capt. That site is good. You have a good trip and weather?

My pleasure to help out. Also, we had a bit of rain, but not enough to cause any problems. Just getting away for the weekend, the weather was the last thing on my mind...
