Honda Dominator

OK, who's got a Honda Dominator (or otherwise known as an NX650) ???

I have an '89, here in the US.

I know these things are well-known overseas...

IIRC, my Honda was manufactured in Italy.

What a long strange trip it's been, my bike would say ;)

I´m not much of a bike fan, but i´ve seen some of those around, but the R1 has a bigger reputation around here.

Excuse my ignorace, but an R1?

The Dominator is an Enduro...

BigF350 04-17-2006 09:47 PM

hmm... I have seen one or two - know nothing about them though.... the 450cc class were more popular here.

I personally had a YZ250 for a while, but a BMW enduro does look very appealing (if expensive)

Have you found it to be a good bike?

I always liked 250's and 400's.

650 four strokes are a monster bike, and can get you in trouble instantly if you don't know the bike well.

My Honda NX 650 has been flawless since I bought it - I store it with the gas tank open to keep wet gas in the carb, and never had a problem with it.

And yes, 650's are monsters that you can get into trouble with ;) I had an '83 XL600 when I was 18, and crashed it twice. Then I flipped the 650 a few years ago too...

I re-geared it for more low-end (topped out around 85 or so on the highway stock) and it's a real stump-climber now.

Just adopted a nice 89 NX650, think it needs some
suspension upgrades/maintenance. Seems the engine
and exhaust combo are pretty good from the factory
though mufflers and jetting can add some hp.

Nice find! Same year as mine...

The dual exhaust (one pipe for each exhaust valve) on a single cylinder is an interesting thing, and definitely, not a big restriction for exhaust....

My '83 XL600 had a y-pipe and one muffler, the size of the duals on the NX.

OBTW - for the sake of the "Vehicularly Correct" crowd out there:

"ENDURO" = "DUAL SPORT", for those who were not around when the BULLTACO, ELSINORE, or MAACO were the bike to have....
(250cc's of "Let's do that AGAIN!!!")

krewat 09-08-2007 04:06 PM

Oh wolf, I was waiting for someone to bring that up ;)

Think XR650, XR600, etc...

Greywolf 09-08-2007 04:17 PM

Shoot, man - not even mini-bikes are what they were back then. I could make a 3.5 horse do forty with a wore out sprocket, but the half-plastic bikes that they sell in parts stores will do a flat out 60+ with very little massaging at all...

Hmm, just to kick the old thread, after suspension and some upgrades :)

Runs good too, hauled tail 10 days 4500 miles up and around the long way through Goose Bay / Happy Valley NL running a constant 75 on the dirt.

Sounds like a great trip... I think mine has a total of around 11K miles on it.

Can't say anything bad about the Honda 4-strokes...
