Winnipeg Arena came down?

Didn`t cach all of the news flash but it looked like this building came down. The ex home of the Winnipeg Jets hockey team.

Just before the Edmonton global TV channel aired the story they went to commercial and said:"Details about the implosion are coming right up"

I laughed for a while :)

It was obviously determined to stay up after the dynamite was done :)

Still seems sad that these old buildings have to come down. We lost some in Saskatoon that I will always miss. The old Arena Rink that was sometimes called the barn. Another was the Jubilee Building Dad and I used to go to for the summer fairs.
These old buildings aren`t viable to save or have asbestos/ dangerous materials in them but still miss this part of my childhood. Apart of my past dies alittle with each one.....:-X15

My uncle used to play for the Winnipeg Jets.

Fomoko1 03-28-2006 01:22 PM

And his name is?

CowboyPenner 03-28-2006 01:25 PM

Steve Cuddie. He played back in the 70's.

Yeah, she came down, but not without a fight. It took them about 4 hours AFTER the implosion to take it down. I'd have liked to see it, but gettin up @ 5:00 to get there, I don't think so.

What I don't understand, is if the city has always had intentions of trying to regain a NHL franchise (which as cool as that would be, is financially impossible. The city couldn't support a team with a $12M payroll, how can they support $32?), why did they build the MTS Centre. It's a nice arena and all, but about 3000 to 4000 people too small for NHL hockey. Even if they sold out every single game, which is a pinch over 15,000 people, they would still be in the bottom third for attendance in the league.

lol i couldnt be bothered to wake up and go see it, that building was in such a state of disrepair, although i did have a lot of drunken hockey and concert memories there

Nice old buildings for sure. Did you ever go to the Capitol Theatre before they took it down?

Fomoko1 04-17-2006 12:50 AM

Lots of times ,wheelz. It was one of my favorite theatres , it was easier to find a parking spots there.
