Engine oil capacity for 4.9 liter 300 i6
 

how many quarts of oil does the 4.9 take. i have an 88 f-150 with that motor and it took 7 with a filter change, and im sure its not over full.

It should be 6 quarts with a new filter.

Yes -EPN is right 6 quarts with the filter change.

i knew that it should be 6, but am wondering why mine took 7. and according to the dipstick is not over full. could it be the angle that the truck sits at on the suspenion be making that muck of a difference. it sits about 4 inches lower in the front than in the rear, and i was on level ground. maybe the way the truck sits on its suspension make that big of a difference although i dont think so. any ideas at all.

It is 6 quarts, no more no less. Next time just put 6 quarts in, and scratch the dipstick at the oil high mark, call the mark your new "full" point.
The truck really needs to be level also.

Make sure your dipstick is all the way in b/c I have other people ie. my dad not get it all the way in and then it looks to be almost a quart off.

Also check the bottom of your dipstick tube to make sure it is not coming out.

well i beg to differ with ya boys, i do believe there are some that take seven quarts. My 87 does, the motor has been changed, so not sure what year it is. I asked this same question and got several replies that there were some that took seven quarts with filter. I use a wix and it runs fine, has no signs of too much oil. I would not reccomend just putting in six quarts and marking the dip stick. You could actually be a quart low if you do this could have bad results. I would run the seven and if it doesnt show signs of over full, thats what i would use. If you search with name you can find that post...

Mine took 7 too. After 6 mines on the "Add" mark. After 7 its just above the "full" mark.

I'd rather drive around with too much oil than not enough. A lot of either isn't good though.

the tube insnt coming out but still it took 7 and with six it was at the add mark and with 7 it is just above the full mark.

Sounds like a difference in oil pans from year to year.

The manual in my 88 F-150 says 6 quarts with a filter change right out of the glovebox? I would think the owners manual would be corrrected if that particular vehicle would take 7? I guess you could always go to the Ford dealer to find out. Hey and keep us updated if you find out any info. differrent from the manual. We'll all have a big class action lawsuit and request that our engines be replaced for faulty info.( Why not right, everybody else does.) Of course mine has 159,000 miles on the clock and is still running would be thier argument.

There are some engine options for particular applications, one of those is the oil cooler installed upon customer request for trucks designed for towing a lot or idling long time. Bypass filtration can add up to 2 quarts. A 90º filter head add half quart BUT for stock trucks should be 6. Mine use 8 because the Bypass filtration system.

I have never seen an extra capacity oil pan but I have hear about those, unfortunatelly I don't have any extra info on this issue.

I have a 1990 300ci, all stock. It takes 6 quarts. Maybe there is a problem with the way your dip-stick is seated in the tube that it is inserted into. Or possibly the dipstick tube is messed up somehow. I think the dipstick is not getting the correct reading for one reason or another, just trying to throw some ideas out there.
