NSS Pic Request (Crashed truck)
 

Does anyone have a good picture of the NSS (neutral safety switch) that mounts to the side of the C6 tranny?

I've got a '77 that was converted to a tilt column. Currently NSS is bypassed to allow starting in any gear and reverse lights are hooked up to a toggle. THIS SETUP HAS WORKED FINE FOR ME THE LAST 8 YEARS W/ NO PROBLEMS.

Story that might be funny in a couple of years but not right now:

Left truck at mechanics to get an inspection sticker. When I went back to get it I started it up to allow time for it to warm up while I paid (reached in and turned the key, didn't even get in). They left it parked in REVERSE(!!) -- needless to say I got a nice view from inside the shop of it (after warming up enough to get a nice idle going) taking off across the parking lot before SLAMMING into their GAS PUMPS(!!).


Now, even though I've gone 8+ years without a NSS I'd like one. :-D

Before I buy one though I'd like to make sure my tranny has the mounts that would allow me to set it up. I've got the shop manual but that has a crappy illustration of the setup and I'm not sure I could tell just going by that.

It looks like the blue linkage comes down to what is labeled "outer manual lever", however in the illustration that lever appears to go beyond the tranny oil pan while in my picture it's not even close. Also my pic has the extra lever with the green hole.

I know... I know... illustrations are simplified. I just want to make sure everything is A-OK before doing anything. If that pic IS of the correct location, are the holes at the 11 & 5 O'clock position the correct holes? Again, using the illustration they appear to be a LOT more tilted than the holes I'm looking to find.

Also (geez, what a mess), assuming that is the correct location and I have the proper mounting holes to mount this sucker do I also need to make sure the round spacer has the correct indentations to match the keys on the NSS shown?? (I know, I should just look/feel to see if they do, but so far I've managed to not get too dirty and I'd to keep it that way until next time I'm in my "working on my truck" clothes)

The blue lever is the kickdown rod

The green holed lever is the main shifter linkage

Those holes are correct

IIRC ,That plastic sleeve only fits one way., You need to put the shifter/trans in neutral, Set the NSS so the hole has a drill bit in it (Neutral position) and then slide it on to the shaft in place of the spacer.

Ok, just a quick overview.

To add NSS.

Remove nut.
Remove kickdown linkage.
Remove plastic spacer.
Install NSS in place of spacer.
Line up NSS w/ drill bit.
Tighten down NSS.
Replace kickdown linkage.
Replace nut.

Is it really that easy? (besides the wiring of course :D)

The shaft with the nut on it should have an indent for the shifter arm as per the illustration in my frst reply.

There should also be a long linkage that runs from the NSS right to the shift arm on the bottom of the steering column

I'm sorry, you lost me on this one.

There's suppose to be linkage that attaches to the NSS from the steering column(??). I'm sure I'm just misunderstanding something. :-D

Am I missing something on my tranny? It's been working fine the last 3+ years...

The NSS was Moved to the transmission in 1978 when Tilt columns (which doesn't affect this) were also introduced.
Therefore the linkages were different from previous years.

If you want a blown up pic of that linkage to the tranny just save my pic to your hard drive and use the zoom in feature in your picture program?

Ah, ok. So you're basically saying my linkage doesn't look like the NSS-on-tranny-pic because Ford used different linkage on the 73-77-NSS-on-column setup....

BUT YOU'RE NOT SAYING that I have to convert my linkage to the NSS-tranny linkage to put my NSS on the tranny (my current linkage will work fine, it just looks different), CORRECT?

You will need the linkage from the 78/79 to use that NSS :)

The important part is whether the shaft on the transmission you have will accept the 78-79 NSS & the shifter arm.

Do you know why this setup requires the other linkage? (Does the current linkage get in the way of the NSS?)
