Denver Machine Shop Recommendations?
 

Hi all,

The 390 in my 69 F250 is tired.

Does anyone have a machine shop that they'd trust, in the Denver area, to rebuild a 390 long block? Or a local shop to pick up a well-built reman to put in?

I have spoken with Rob McQ at Blue Oval. I've spoken with Jasper's. Any others you can recommend?

Hmmm. Hastings, NE (Gessford Machine) is only about six hours away. At least the way I drive. LOL

I'll ask a few people I know, just a matter of catching up with them.

Have you set a ballpark budget?

Yes. I have about $3000 to work with. If I need to put that all in engine and clutch (while the motor's out) that's ok. Of course, what I have left over after the motor/clutch goes to
other improvements to the truck. I don't want to do a halfa$$ job on the motor though. And time will be of the essence. I can't have the truck down for 2 weeks while a shop builds the motor. It'd work out far better if I can have a motor ready to go in when I pull the old one.

Of course, for that kind of money, I'm also looking at other trucks. I want to get into a crew cab, preferably 4x4, but that will be a stretch for $3k.

May I toss in another name for you to check with. The gent who I frequent for the pre-81 emission testing gave me a line on MountainSide Engine. They are on west 5th Ave in Golden, Lee Dalton is the contact name. Evidently he and the emission guy are racing buddies and it is my understanding that he is very knowledgable about the Ford motor. Give them a call and let me know what you think (303-271-0407).

I've found some places in town (Blue Oval Performance, Havana Machine, Colorado Custom Cylinder Head) that I'd like to work with, but they 10 days to 3 weeks build time. To me, that shows they're doing something right to have that amount of business. But it's longer than I can wait. I need the truck to get around.

How's the 65 project coming along?

Oh, Man...Use my engine guy.

His prices are VERY reasonable, and he warranties his work. Hes built my truck motor, re-done heads for my stepdad, built 4 of my friends race engines, and was the only shop in colorado to figure out how to make my friends mopar run like it should. You should deffinently call him, and tell him John from Silverplume sent you his way...His work is top notch.

His turn around is usually pretty good too.

Ohh, and $3000 would get you into my truck, but it will need atleast a transmission flush, and new torque converter soon....More work than money...But still....

Well... We have stepped up (or back) from a running truck to one with body panels lying around and the truck gutted as the body work progresses. I have had too little time and too many other projects. I needed to complete the other projects first as they will lead to more quality time with the truck. Hope to have the interior completed within the next few weeks so I can at least take it out and terrorize the neighbors again :-X22

I had a reman 390 put in at Colorado Engine in Arvada and they treated me well. Motor came with a 60,000 mile warranty too. Just another option for you. $3000 would easily do it for the reman to be put in and they had one at the shop when I asked for it.

It bugs me when someone doesn't let you know how a job turned out, so here goes....

I checked with most of the shops mentioned and visited some.The shops that I really liked had good prices, listened to what I wanted and were clean. The also had very long wait times, up to 6 weeks. I needed a short turn-around, so I did it myself!

I went with Motorworks out of Spokane, WA. I pulled the old motor on Friday, pressure washed Saturday and installed Sunday! Fired right up and man, what a difference from the old )(*&^ed out leaker! Did a new clutch too. Man, it's fun to drive now!
