what trany with what truck
On this site I've seen 7700lbs f150's with a 5.4 engine and a 4r70w transmision in them and my 7700 4x4 has the 5.4 but has a r4100w tranny. What's the scoop with that.I didn't think any 5.4 engine trucks had the small car tranny in them. The 5.4 puts out alot of torque for the 4r70w tranny???Is it just a 5.4 4x4 thing or is it an option?????

my 2000 stepside has a 5.4 with a 4r70w,and my brothers 4x4 has the 4r100.im pretty sure its a option.
|
Is yours a 4x4?If not it must be all 5.4's with 4x4......I'm guessing of course.

Well, I have a 2003 Screw 4x4 with a 5.4, and a Tow Package (Tranny Cooler). But I have the 4r70w. I can tell by the door jam sticker. Plus my dad is a retired Ford Mech. He could tell because the pan on the 70 tranny is much smaller. I basically have the same tranny in my '03 Screw as I do in my '92 Grand Marquis.
I'm guessing as long as you aren't pushing that towing limit or raising hell offroad, the 70 tranny is fine. I think the upgraded tranny only came with the optional packages. I don't think it was an option for the Screw's though. |
they also now use the 75w instead of the 70w
|
I would check again because the pan on both are almost identical from what I was told.I also don't think the 70w is strong enough for the torque of the 5.4..I could be wrong.
|
the pans are not identical they are very different the 70w uses a pan similar to the old aod trans.

The 4R70W is plenty strong. The only problem I ever had with it was the pillow soft shifts. Tuner solved that.

I have a 98 F150 SC 4X2 with the trailer towing package. It has a E4OD. The pan has 20 bolts and looks exactly the same as my dad's 01 7700 SC 4X2 with a 4R100. The picture I have of the 4R70W the pan is more square and has 12 bolts, possible 1 or 2 more as there is text over top of the picture.

The 4R70W is the most common tranny in the F150's. Some had the optional 4R100's, but most use the 4R70W. My 4R70W in my 01 5.4L OFFROAD 4x4 works fine and I have towed over 7000lbs many times.
4R70W's will hold up behind 700hp Mustangs, so they can't be too bad. |
I'm sorry ...I got my e4od and 70w mixed up.....sorry guy's...Thank's for the info and tunning me up.
