Bad noise at idle
I have a 99 F250SD with the 7.3l. At idle it has a loud rattle, but when you speed the motor up, it smooths out. I thought it might be the turbo, but it seems tight. Could this be in the injectors? Hopefully not the motor. Any ideas?

have seen the auto strkes that make a loud metalic scrappig noise at ide until the concertor locks up

OK I don't know much about diesel, what are the auto strikes?

I think he/she is trying to say "I have seen automatic powerstrokes make a loud metallic scrapping noise until the torque converter locks up".
Do you have a automatic? If so the torque coverter (I have read) can make noise and or the flexplate can crack and make noise. Does it change as the motor warms up? If so it could be the 7.3 "cackle", the #8 injector somtimes will do this. Look up "cackle" to read up on it. |

Thanks, just read that thread. That could be my problem. It just started. When I start the engine, it's not too bad, but as it warms up it seems to get louder. When you here noises like that, I just see dollars signs I don't have.

i test drove a 99 SD w/ 7.3l before i found my 96 for less $$$,
it had a very loud noise @ idle. went away as soon as you hit the pedal. it was the original owner w/ like 70-80K. he said it was there since new and was under warranty so he drove it. dealer said it would not hurt anything. it bothered me so i did not buy it. but later on i asked my father ..a diesel tech and he said he had one do the same thing, it had been to numerous shops w/ out any luck. he found it!!! it was some welding slag inside the downpipe. he pulled the pipe out and ran the truck...no noise, ground out the pieces and put it back on. truck fixed. do you have the stock exhaust??? it is an odd condition but it was seen on one other that i know of. |
I bought the truck used, but I believe it is stock. I have had the truck for 2 years without any noticeable noise, but it suddenly started yesterday.

The problem is the torque convertor on 99 models and up, they make a metallic sound. ford trans tech told me to replace the convertor. There is no problem with the torque convertor, but to get rid of the noise, it needs to be replaced.

Had the same problem with my 99, turned out to be the torque converter. Finally got tired of the racket after a year or so and replaced the tc and the noise went away completely.

hopefully it aint a knock and the reason you cant hear it is b/c of noise the motor makes when you get on it a lil bit. Good Luck man. My motor blew at 60k and the service guy asked me could u not hear it knockin and i said it is a diesel it is kinda hard to hear that if you aint lookin for it. i swear after the new one every time i heard a weird noise i would take it to the tech to see what was goin on. i was really paranoid.

Thanks for all the info. Just heard from my mechanic. It was the torque converter. He said he took it out and could here it rattle when he shook it. He suggested having it rebuilt. What would be a better option, rebuilt or new? I know knew is pricey, especially from Ford. Autozone shows one for $250, but I have had problems in the past not receiving the right part for my vehicle and that is a special order.
