Fires in Alaska

The Alaskan fire season has started early this year. Resources are already being stretched to the max. Here in Homer we had a big one recently and it is still being monitored. There are some pictures of the Homer fire at justalaska.net. Look in the forums section under Homer. There is also a web cam of the spit and Kachemak Bay. It is a new web site and under construction, but the pictures are great.

Last summer I had enough smoke to last me a lifetime. I hope they put them out before they get out of control this year.

Isnt there something burning east of you guys in Fairbanks? Just curious. Trying to rekindle some of these threads. HaHa had to use that word.

There's our NEW Fearless Leader already trying to get the ranks FIREd up. He,he,he. Use to be a FFI/EMT-D myself before moving up here to AK. Gosh I really miss the FD!

On my way home yesterday there was a bit of a fire about 50 miles south of Coldfoot. That would be about 200 miles North of here. It didn't look to be real large but the wind was blowing about 40 mph so I am sure it spread fast. There was only 200 yards of zero visibility in the road and only about 50 yards where the hot embers where flying by. The way the wind was blowing it would not surprise me if it is a very large fire by now. It has been raining here for hours so I doubt there are any fires close by at the moment.

Me, firing up the ranks, of course. Actually I just like the OT. Been on all of the big fires since Big Lake and love those 12-16 hours days.

I did see something in the paper about a fire thats over 23,000 acres 50 miles east or northeast of Fairbanks. Hope you guys dont get another one. Man was it hard to breath at times last summer. Espically on the fire line. Got to see some pretty cool country and got some cool photos.

PS Willies have you check into the MatSu VFD. Just curious. I dont know much about their service requirements.
