OK. Hopefully someone helps us soon or we'll be needing one of those miner's helmets that has a built in flashlight on the top of it. Yikes!

I dunno how these trucks are, but my 93 Ranger was a real PITA. I had to take the entire dash off and part of the guage cluster to get to it. I'll look in the Haynes manual tonight and see if I can't find anything, but more than likely you'll have to tear the dash apart.

I had to replace bulbs in my f250 and I had to take the dash apart. If I remember correctly it was kind a tedious clumsy job and was kind of tight to get the bulbs out because they are sunken in a fair bit.

I had the same problem on my 99 f-350 with a powerstoke. It was easier than i thought. You will have to take your dash apart. First i removed mu radio so that you can take the dash right out of the way. On mine to remove the head/marker light plug there were red clips that held the plug into the socket, move them and pull plug out of the socket, now the dash should come out. There are 2 screws that hold the instrument cluster to the mounting bracket on the bottom remove them and the instrument cluster should be able to be move to get at the back of it. With a small pair of pliers remove the lights that are bad. there where held in with a tan type socket just twist it with the pliers. Most of the sockets are marked on the rear of the intrument cluster.

I have the same truck as you, 01 f-250 S.D. ext cab with 138000 miles. My dash lights started going out on me also about a year ago. First one then another and another, all starting from the left moving to the right. I have three out now. I drive a lot of dirt roads so I though the bouncing around did it. I had to go to the dealer to order them and they gave me the wrong ones at $4 apiece so be sure to get the right ones, there are two different sizes back there. To fix them you do have to remove the radio first. Good luck.

1. Using the special anti theft tools (allen wrenches or similar objects that fit snug in the holes) will push the locking feature out of the way.
2. Remove the two screws at the top of the radio hole. They hold the dash on.
3. Using a screw driver CAREFULLY go around the dash and pry the retaining clips loose. They just push into slots to hold the dash in place.
4. Once you have it loose disconnect the wiring plugs and move the dash cover out of the way.
5. Now you can remove the screws that hold the instrument cluster and get to the bulbs.
6. As far as reinstall well I think you can figure that out.

Just a thought, but why you are in there, I'd change all of the bulbs so you don't have to do it again.

Yea you bet, great advice. I haven't ordered the correct bulbs yet but I am sure they are just as spendy as the other bulbs back there.

I am assuming that the removal and installation is the same for a 1998 F-250 with a 5.4 V8 engine? It would suck if it wasn't.

Anyone know of the lightbulb part number to get? I dont want to have to take it apart just to see, put it back together, then order the bulbs, and have to tear it apart again.

The illumination bulb number is 194LL (Long Life)
