Electric fan suggestions
 

I'm interested in suggestions on what type and cfm fan to install in my 65 Econoline with a 302. Should I go with a single or dual fan? Should it be mounted flush with the radiator or smaller and angled up toward the radiator? Where should the temperature sensor be mounted?

I just put one on my ranger. It was easy to install and works like a charm

Save your rmoney and buy the best to start with. Get a Black Magic fan from Flex-A-Lite. Their fan is smaller in diameter than the 'off the shelf' one's from Advanced, Pep Boys, etc., but will pull almost double the cfm's...2800 vs. 1600 if I remember right. Be sure it's pulling instead of pushing...any of them are much more efficient this way. They also hace a rubber seal that goes around the shroud of the fan and seals it to the rediator where others don't. The Black Magics also come with a thermostatic sensor so you can have the fan come on when you want it to.

I drag race an '87 Ranger with a 351W in it. Somewhere around 600hp. I used a radiator out of a V-6 Explorer and the B/M fan and driving it on the street in 90+ degree heat will never see the temp over 180.

Just so I'm clear, did both of you remove the belt driven fan?

What it run you money wise, I was able to install a 14" with the themostat/relay for ac for under $90. Yes Mikeleew no more belt driven fan. That Hayden link will get you to their catalog and an application guide.

No belt driven fan here either. Last time I checked the Black Magic assembly runs around $175. Sounds steep, but in my experience the one's for less money won't do the job. I know there are other brands that advertise that much in cfm's but they are in the same price ballpark...I'm just familiar with the Flex-A-Lite brand name. They are also good about selling individual replacement parts, i.e.- fan blades, motors, controls, etc instead of some that want you to buy a whole new kit. Mine is about 6 years old and never had any problems so far. DO be sure to wire it through a relay. Relays are cheap and will handle the amperage draw of the stronger fans where most rocker/toggle switches will burn out quickly. I'm pretty sure the B/M kit comes with all the necessary wiring and relays.
