Mazda 5speed in Ranger????
 

Is it possible to use a 93 Mazda 5 speed behind a 2.3 if I change the bell houseing to one from a Lima 2.3 5 speed. The tranys sure look a lot alike.

As far as I know, most Rangers ARE Mazda trannies. They used Mitsubishi and Toyo Kogyo in the older ones, but I think they went to mostly Mazdas. (Ford owns Mazda). There's a lot of good tranny info on the Ranger Station website in their tech articles.

Mazda 5-speeds have integral bells...they can't be swapped.

If you thought The B2300 and Ranger are different, then as noted, they are not.

mazda has used a 4 and five speed over the years in their cars and pickups that use a clutch housing that is held on with 8 bolts. it was so the same transmission could be used between the RX series and piston engines. later when they started to use ford engines in the ranger trucks and also some of the aerostars they had a housing that fit the 2300 (pinto) style motor. weather Mitsubishi or Mazda or Toyo Kogyo or Jatco built it I have no idea, but I know theyve been useing that same design since 1974 with the cast aluminum bottom cover. and the ones with this cover have clutch housings that bolt on and interchange with some other applications incl. some mitsubishi trucks and maybe some others. wow I did not intend this to be this long! hope this helps some.

Didn't Mazda change over to Rangers in '93? So that 93 Mazda B would actually be a Ranger clone built here in the US. It would fit behind any US 2.3. You are thinking of the old Japanese-built Mazda B series. It would just be like the Navajo and the Explorer.

The Mazda I have must be an early 93 as it is a old style Japanese built B2600 PU. The reason I have been asking this question is because I want to build a 2.3 Lima with 12-1 pistions in order to run it full time on propane. The 2.3 Lima is a better candidate for the conversion than the Mazda engine. I realize that I have many ather things to adapt and fabricate but if I can make the 2.3 engine fit the trany the battle is half done.

Does Ford own Mazda 100% or is it just a portion that Ford owns of Mazda?

Ford is the majority stockholder of 25%. They even have an American sit on the board of Mazda.

I believe the 2.3's used in the old Mazda's were Brazilian-built 2.3 versions of the US-built Lima 2.3's so they should bolt up. You could replace it easily enough with a US 2.3.

some of the courier & mazda 2.3 engines have both the
2.3 and the 2.0 bolt pattern on the rear of the block too.
I believe this is the same engine (design) as was used in
the old mercury capri's '74-'78 and mustang II's '74-'78.

also on that mazda trans, you can find early to mid 80's
bell housings for the german 2.6/2.8/2.9/4.0 litre V-6 eng.
they were in some rangers and areostars with std trans.
