Towing with a Lightning
I searched the boards and couldn't find many threads about towing with a lightning. I am looking to upgrade my current truck (daily driver/tow vehicle) next spring and I can not decide what to do. How well does a lightning tow? I would be towing my mustang and open car trailer to the track. Sometimes distances over 6 hours away. I know the towing capacity is 5000lbs, my car/trailer would probably be just over 4000lbs. I also would occasionally tow my dads 23' boat, which probably weights in ~5000lbs. Why is the towing capacity so low? Is it the trans? Tires? Suspension? I was also looking at F250s, but the fun factor of the L really has be thinking. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

I've towed with both of my Lightnings. Usually my 87 Mustang on an open trailer, roughly +-5000 lbs. I've towed on several 14 hour road trips. An f250 will tow better because of the heavier duty suspension, and longer wheel base. The Lightning has more than enough pulling power and really does just fine. So as long as you don't buy a Lightning JUST to tow, you will love it. Nothing else I've found can do it all like a Lightning. You can load the bed full of crap, pull your mustang to the track, then uload everything and have a truck that can bust off 12 second timeslips . And do it all easy!
The only drawbacks are- you won't get great gas mileage, but that is true with most trucks. And it drives like a Mustang in the snow. Don't even know if thats an issue for you . |
